Voracek v. Couture

Logan Couture
25 GP 12 G 24 A 36 P on a decent 67's team playing .500 hockey in the OHL

Jakub Voracek
32 GP 14 G 28 A 42 P on a slighly below average Halifax team playing a little below .500 hockey in the Q

Why is Voracek widely regarded as being a top 2 pick where as Couture is regarded as being around 5 or 6? I was under the impression that the Q was a slightly easier league for scorers. Couture is scoring at a better PPP pace than Voracek in what I thought was a slightly tougher league, though his team is a little better (record wise) than Voracek. What's the deal here?

Nothing else?

That was the point of me making this thread, I was wondering what the difference is.

From what I've heard Voracek plays a very pro-style game, other than that, I don't know much about either one.

Couture was struck by mono maybe two months ago, and because of that, he dropped in the rankings. Now, his stock seems to go up again. He could very well be ranked at #1 at the season's end.

man there is a quote from the dark ages...the QMJHL for years now has not been the scoring machine league it use to be...the OHL IMO is outscoring the QMJHL.

No it isn't. The Q is still the highest scoring league, although it's not that much of a difference anymore. On the other hand the WHL is still the lowest scoring by far.

QMJHL
06/07 - 360 GP - 2802 G - 7,78 GPG
05/06 - 630 GP - 4669 G - 7,41 GPG
04/05 - 560 GP - 3572 G - 6,38 GPG
03/04 - 560 GP - 3764 G - 6,72 GPG

OHL
06/07 - 370 GP - 2749 G - 7,43 GPG
05/06 - 680 GP - 4776 G - 7,02 GPG
04/05 - 680 GP - 4161 G - 6,12 GPG
03/04 - 680 GP - 4238 G - 6,23 GPG

WHL
06/07 - 402 GP - 2502 G - 6,22 GPG
05/06 - 720 GP - 4195 G - 5,83 GPG
04/05 - 720 GP - 3910 G - 5,43 GPG
03/04 - 720 GP - 3985 G - 5,53 GPG

How can you state your opinion on a matter that is based on fact?

Stats above prove otherwise.

well I was taking a quick look at the scorers in the top of the list...was going by that...I didn't look at overall goals. Not a big difference though in goals.

Buffalo87, I wouldn't focus too much on the difference between the two leagues. The division that Voracek plays in with Halifax is the lower scoring division of the Q, so, in terms of the offensive environment that Couture and Voracek are playing in, there's little or no difference. It would be more constructive, when comparing these two players, to contrast their styles.

Another poster pointed out that Couture had mononucleosis. That would have more of an impact on reducing Couture's points than anything else.

Both are top 5 prospects for the 2007 draft. Couture is a two-way centre, with good passing skills and great hands. His skating is not a strength, but neither is it a weakness. Couture is willing to get his nose dirty in order to score.

Voracek is a finesse/power winger. He has a great shot and loves to drive to the outside and cut to the net. He's great along the boards and is tenacious going after the puck.

Both players will be good NHLers and sould be considered safe picks with upside. By that, we mean they are sure bets to make the NHL and contribute on the top line if their development continues. At worst, Couture will be a third-line centre with offensive skill who can be a top penalty killer. At worst, Voracek, will be a second-liner. We don't see any bust potential with these two players.

Thank you very much for the info. I knew Couture had mono, which is part of the reason I found it strange that Voracek is ranked higher even though they have roughly the PPG ratio (with the edge to Couture). Thanks for the info, very helpful.
