Went to the game last night here against the Victoria Royals.

Kind of a snoozer as the Oil Kings outclassed them in every way.

Lazar is just special. Guy is ALWAYS in the middle of the play, whether breaking up plays in his own end, mixing it up physically with hits or grinding along the boards, or creating opportunities.

Moroz was extremely disappointing. The guy was mostly invisible except when he was playing recklessly and he took 1 or 2 totally stupid penalties and deserved another 2-3. Didn't create offense, didn't play much of anything resembling defense, and always seemed to be out of position. 2 or 3 times he cut to the net with or without the puck and created chances that way, but basically only because he's so big and physically mature. He's essentially pre-concussion Ben Eager, to my eyes. All the tools and a 5 cent brain. I just didn't see any hockey acumen.

Another player who REALLY impressed me was Dysin Mayo. He'll be drafted this year and if he keeps playing like that, I'd expect him to be a second rounder (he isn't big enough and doesn't put up enough points to go higher, IMO). A bit undersized but a great skater, extremely smart pinches and plays to retain or regain puck possession against bigger players. Must've broken up 10+ passes in his own zone, created lots of opportunities on offense, and was the most reliable defender on the team.

I get that Reinhart is the captain and has long been a good player for them, but I've seen him play 3-4 times now and I've never understood why he was taken so highly by NYI. Aside from being good in his own zone, he doesn't really do much else. Why would you spend a top-10 pick on a predominantly stay-at-home guy?

I didn't realize that was Kanzig at the time. Wow, he better improve his fighting cuz he's one of the worst skaters even in the WHL.

Gee, the OKs are playing well. Almost four games without giving up a goal.

Rather refreshing, isn't it?

The boys are definitely rolling right now though. Jarry has really found his groove.

A solid 6-2 win for the Oil Kings over Moose Jaw tonight. For anybody that's tired of the gong show that is the Oilers go check out the Kings if you want to watch some good hockey.

Yeah, pretty much.

Team loses 3 or 4 of its top players from last year and is still playing well above average hockey.

Would you say Moroz has only increased his stock since getting drafted? How is he as a prospect compared to Henrik Samuelsson? I hear we wanted him.

I think he has gone a long way to justifying where he was taken. The pick was panned by many, most of whom probably dont have a good idea of what Moroz' game really is like, they probably figure he is nothing more than a goon, but he actually does have pretty good hands for a big guy and he skates pretty well for a big guy too.

I questioned how early he was taken, I thought he would be a good pick in the third/fourth round. Ive heard that he was never going to make it out of the second round. Not sure if that was true or not.

I was high on Samuelsson but my opinion of him post draft has gone downhill quite a bit. I would say in comparison Moroz has improved his game much more substantially than Samuelsson since the draft.

It was just sad how vocal a small minority was about this too.

It would have taken only a few games of watching Moroz to see he brought more than that.

It's obviously still very early, but it appears the 2012 was a fairly weak draft in respect to depth. I recall MacGregor mentioning they wanted Moroz and didn't believe he would be available past the first round. There seemed to be a lot of posters who liked the idea of drafting Moroz but not at 32nd, his limited offensive production in his post draft year compounded things. Long term who knows, but it looks like EDM's scouts recognized the lack of quality prospects and decided it was the best option to select him when they did.

I didn't get to go, but my folks saw the Oil Kings and they said Moroz played very well.

Getting 3 points will do that.

23gp. 15-8-23 +11 Tied for the team lead in goals and ES goals. Not too shabby by a guy that many were quick to write off. We could sure use a big body that goes to the net and can finish.

To be fair, even people that watched Moroz last season would've come to the same conclusion. The guy was just a really dumb hockey player and I was almost certain he'd be nothing more than a 4th liner. The difference between this season is without a doubt hockey sense, he finally knows where to be to use his size and hands effectively. It'd be nice if he could turn into a Kyle Clifford with better fighting technique.

I disagree. He has always shown he has some decent hands, and can skate. The difference between this year and last year is he is on the first line, and first unit pp, and he is staying there and the competition has thinned out considerably, and he is a year older.

I dont think anyone expected him to go as early as he did in the draft, but those who have watched him often know that he is more than just a goon.

New @EdmOilKings acquisition Alec Dillon is a recruit of RPI. The Engineers are deep in net though, this is worth watching. Dillon is 6'6.

Baddock finally puts up his first goal of the year then gets another one today. Good for him and good for that line with Bertolucci and Benson. If the Oil Kings are going to do anything in the playoffs they're gonna need those guys to contribute on occasion.

What the OKs are doing is pretty impressive. Losing a lot of their top players from last season, most people had them pegged as a bubble team at best. They're 8 games above .500 and went 3-for-3 on a 3 game in 3 night road trip.

Agreed. Granted two of the three were played against the lowly Hurricanes, but a highly impressive effort from the boys nonetheless.

If we can get some nice progression from some of our younger guys on the bottom lines we may be able to make some noise in the playoffs again.

I'm just looking through the roster and I'm wondering, since I don't watch the Oil kings much, what's Cole benson's role on the team? Why is he on the team with his stats and size? Is he a defensive specialist? Or something?
