Gary Roberts

I have started Nedved campaign before. Now i am going to throw another game which is going to be Roberts, who has been sitting in the PBOX. I think he will be a good fit for our fourth line where he could replace Jacques who IMO is not ready to show some emotions yet. Guys like Roberts displays some emotions which nowadays pretty hard to find in an oiler uniforms.

Fourth Line??? The same Gary Roberts who, regardless of his age (40), has 27 points this season?
This guy could be playing on our top line right now, and making it twice as good as it already is. I actually wouldn't mind the pickup. We would have an awesome, defensively-aware, blue-collar first line. Could you imagine:

Smyth Horcoff Roberts
Sykora Nedved Hemsky
Torres Stoll Pisani
Pouliot Reasoner Lupul

Why ? that is the question, what because he displays emotion, have we forgot Moreau or Smith (as bad as he has been he still show emotion) or Roli or Torres

when the oiler announcer said the he thought roberts might be traded, my immediate thought is that he is a good guy for lowe to go after.

We obviously need a significant upgrade at defence. What if Lowe has been unable to find a gm to fleece? What if the other gm are asking for a top 3 forward for a top 2 dman?

If lowe can pick up a nedved and a roberts, he has the assets to trade a horcof, stoll, or torres etc for a top dman.

I agree... unlike Nedved, Roberts still looks like he might be able to contribute something to an NHL team.

I think I mentioned him when it was learned Moreau was going to be out for a while. I've always thought he'd be a great fit on this team, despite being a former Flame. I've always liked his game (but hated most of the sweaters he's worn over his career).

That said, I don't think he's going to be an Oiler any time soon.

I dont think Roberts was in the pressbox tonight,(Well technically I guess he was, but not cause he was a Healthy Scratch) He was ailing from some sorta of Injury, thats why he didnt play tonight.

Before that he looked to be having a decent season for his standards,Roberts was playing on a line with Jokinen in previous games, I doubt Lowe would have any interest in him now at this time in his career, I could see Roberts leaving to maybe another East conf. Playoff contender, perhaps a Buffalo at the tradedeadline, if nothing else to give a young club that added veteran leadership that can provide so much. Buffalo I could really see him going to a team like that, Roberts can still keep up a bit, decent skater he gets around out there still at age 37 or 38, he's not washed up in the league by any means, most likely this would be his last season I imagine, and since he's never won a Cup? or was he a member of cowtowns 89' team? before he left cowtown, he sure as heck didnt win a Stanley Cup in Toronto in his time there, LOL

He could be moved at deadline day, depending on if teams have enough cap flexability to aquire his contract. He could really give that veteran exp. a contending team would need to push for a cup, he could be a 3rd line peice to the puzzle for another club and he can still play a solid 13, 14 mins if asked and chip in a few goals here n there on the Man Adv. , but i dont see Roberts comming out west in a deal man, he' probly has a family and wouldnt like the western Conf. Sched.

I respect his game tho, he plays on the edge, n like someone mentioned he's a 2 way player, hes not soft, 873pts in 1129 career games played, 85pts in 114 career playoff games... those are pretty good career stats. only a 50 goal scorer once, he is consistent though, even towards the ladder years of his contract, I could see other playoff teams in the East having interest in him towards the deadline to put their team over the plateau, I doubt Lowe would be one of them, but you never know.

I'm a prospects/young players kind of a guy, but I would LOVE to get Roberts. He is a beast, he has heart and always brings his game. He would improve our team big-time. When I heard that he was scratched and so was Winchester I was hoping that we swapped them straight across, I would be laughing all the way to the bank with that deal.

as someone who has a good friend that knows Gary personally, I'm not sure he'd go for a trade to Edmonton at all...he's settling in with his new girl and enjoys Florida , not to mention he's great friends with Joey Nieuwendyk and is all set to retire relatively close to him. I'd be surprised to see this one go down, but I'd love to have him.

Does Roberts have a no trade clause? I'm almost positive he doesn't. And in that case, it's not up to him. If he gets traded, he gets traded. Besides, the guy is unrestricted after this year, so he'd be free to do whatever he wants (like sign in Florida, retire, etc.).

He's a professional. He wouldn't refuse to play, he wouldn't retire over it, and he wouldn't piss and moan about it either. That much, I'm sure. And like I said before, if he really doesn't like it, he doesn't have to come back.

Roberts might not complain openly about going to one place or another, but he would privately. Trading away veteran players who you've signed as a UFA can hurt your chances of signing other guys down the road.

I'm sure the Panthers would consult with Roberts about possible destinations. Ottawa, Toronto and Buffalo would be at the top of his list I'm sure. Buffalo could really load up with him and could probably deal a guy like Paille to get him at the deadline.

Maybe if you trade them within the same year as signing them (even then, Boston had no trouble attracting Savard and Chara after trading Scatchard within a couple months after signing him as a UFA), but certainly not half way through the following season (which is also the last one under contract). That happens all the time.

I doubt it. Roberts had requested a trade back to Toronto in the offseason, and they didn't trade him. Roberts didn't ***** and whine about it, and actually has played very well. he's a pro, and if he gets traded, I'm sure he understands that part of the business, and would continue to be the professional that he is.
