The Flyers have gone cheap on goaltending quite often the last 20 years. They've spent plenty of $ on scoring. Goaltending is always their Achille's heel. Where's it got them? I will say the $ to Henrik seems just a bit high but just maybe he'll start playing better now.

I like Talbot. I think he has the makings of a very good backup. I think people need to realize he's been on a hot streak though--that expecting him to continue with the GAA and save % numbers is not taking much account of his history as a professional goaltender. I think he's NHL quality. i thought he was last year but he's not as good as Lundqvist.

It is a very high cap hit.

Lundqvist is also a top 3 goalie in the league and has been his whole career.

I play the position, and coach it as well. I am very aware of how the butterfly position is played. I can assure you, he will be fine for many more years.

As someone who's played between the pipes my entire life, (1990+), I can tell you playing on your knees does nothing to your body.

But maybe you can explain to me why Henrik's been injury-free his entire career?

Richter was your textbook standup goalie who had how many torn acl's?

Right... That's what I thought..

I agree with that. He is one of the best ones in the NHL.
I just feel like its a large hit. Not that you guys cant afford it. I just feel like there are tons of great goalies that can be had for 6 to 6.5M a season. even less.

I guess people are not aware that the cap could reach as high as $80 million in 2015. This should not have a major impact on what the Rangers can do in the future.

The cap will continue to go up.

Richards contract is gone this summer.

He is JUST entering his prime.

In all honesty I dislike this badly. Far too much money for a 32 year old.

There are, but not that will be hitting the market any time soon.

We've been talking about this here. If the cap really is to rise, there will be few to no good free agents available, and those that do make it will be absurdly overpaid.

It is in the interests of teams to keep their assets on long terms deals, which will become better over time as the cap goes up.

Richter tore his acl on the goal post going side to side, could have happened to anyone. Keep telling yourself this is a great contract while Lundqvist's salary will handcuff the team, and they'll wallow in mediocrity year after year. I'm sure the teeny bopper know it alls in here will call me a hater like always but oh well.

You don't just enter your prime at 31, maybe in the old NHL

They probably will wallow in mediocrity year after year. You're really going out on a limb there.

It will NOT be because of Lundqvist's salary/performance.

The most pathetic thing about this argument is the lack of specificity behind it. "OMG, we could spend this money on SCORERZ!" just doesnt cut it. Its absurd and dumb.

Relax people, its a $1.7M annual raise for him. This team needs to get away from the mentality that cap space is going to buy more scoring. It hasn't worked for this franchise ever.
Absolutely correct.

And when you think of it as a raise; it'd a good deal for our only franchise player.

Or was Nash going to be our highest paid player forever?

I won't call you a hater, but I will call you ignorant to the facts of the situation. Extremely misinformed.

The cap is going to go up, (could be $80-90 million by 2015) and Richards contract is GONE this summer.

All the information is out there, just go and do a little research.

I agree with you BRB on the omg scorer point, I'm flat out not in love with this, too many years, too much money that's my opinion and it's not a crazy one. I really think his play will begin to drop because of his style of play.

Frankly, I don't care too much about the cap going up. You pay your best players the most money, period. Thats how it works in any market.

All this crap about how this hamstrings the team going forward is not more than ignorant conjecture. Lets make the team far worse so we can save a few million on the cap and get SCORERS!

Sounds like a helluva plan. Well thought out and specific.

aside from the fact that the cap is going up in the near future, the difference between paying hank 7 mil or 8.5 mil is being able to sign an Asham, Pyatt, Pouliot for 1-2 mil every offseason, id much rather do what other teams do and skip the veteran dead ends and go with hungry youth in the bottom 6.

He plays deep in his net and his methodically sound as they come.

Richter, who you sighted earlier, was an acrobat in net.

I think he'll hold up just fine.

“@NYP_Brooksie: If NHL revenue increases by 5% per (likely will be higher) and PA exercises annual 5% bump, cap will exceed $100M way before end of deal
