Messier is currently a "special advisor" to Oilers management.

So this was money owed to him by the Coyotes, and the league is paying him instead?

I wonder why....

Good that he got his money, just sucks knowing if this was someone else though the NHL would have said screw off.

Bettman isn't as evil, as people make him out to be. To be paid directly and get it resolved ASAP was his doing.

What charity here. Gretzky had no right to this money. He invested and lost it.

Why does the NHL bother with Wayne?

he's an old man who has no place anymore. Sounds mean, but those dweeb beat writers who think the NHL needs him are dreaming.

This is the type of feel-good story that never fails to warm my heart: wealthy person "A" wins a pissing match with wealthy people "B" over millions of dollars that none of them really need. When's the parade?

It was really money Jerry Moyes owed him (personal services contract.) Moyes dumped the contract onto the Coyotes right before he put them into BK.

One of the reasons why the NHL sued Moyes was to get money back to pay Gretzky.
