No details, $700M+ total, but it involves a bunch of infrastructure investment (a significant amount of which I imagine would have been done regardless).

The 700M is Rogers investment into the province of Alberta.

Thanks. I guess what I am asking is... How much is Katz paying? I was hoping you would say 100% but...

Actually, including San Jose in the name was required by the City of San Jose - as part of the lease terms.

That's why the Tank's (originally the unnamed San Jose Arena) subsequent official names have been:

Compaq Center at San Jose
HP Pavilion at San Jose
SAP Center at San Jose

You can also add the NBA's dueling American Airlines Center (Dallas) and American Airlines Arena (Miami).

This is a perfect example of how Canadians don't pay too much for wireless and cable services (do I really need a face here?)

I'd be willing to take a naming rights deal with Rogers.

James by Rogers.

Mayor will even be in attendance.

Perhaps it'll announce ground breaking?
Looks outside at the 2 feet of snow.....probably not.

We now have Rogers Centre (Toronto), Rogers Arena (Vancouver), and Rogers Place (Edmonton)

What's next? Rogers Forum, Rogers Stadium, Rogers Coliseum, Rogers Gardens...

And while its not the same, for a few years there we had Scotiabank Place (Ottawa) and the Scotiabank Saddledome (Calgary).

You should sell that one to a Chinese cookie maker.

So that'll be two NHL arenas (Rogers Place, Rogers Arena), an MLB team (Rogers Centre), as well as an OHL team (Rogers K-Rock Centre) with Rogers owning the arena naming rights.

I heard on the radio Rogers gave Katz 700 million for the whole agreement. Edmontonians/Albertans must be pissed that they coughed up more money than Katz did and yet he gets to walk away with 700 million

^ No the 700 million is the total investment Rogers is making in Alberta over the next four years.

Specific financial terms for the arena naming rights were not disclosed

It's totally going to be called Rogers Hockey Night In Canada too, isn't it? You're watching Rogers Hockey Night In Canada on Rogers Sportsnet featuring the Edmonton Oilers by Rogers at Rogers Place presented by Rogers. We'll be back after these messages from Rogers!

That would kill me, why did they not go with Rexall, no money coming from that deal?

Rexall is one of Katz's companies. I suspect he would prefer the money coming from somewhere else.

Sounds like rhetoric to me. Because I live in Alberta, almost anything I do could be technically an investment in Alberta.

The article tells us nothing. Its just like when Mendel and Katz were saying it will "develop the downtown economy", but wouldn't say how. Just use abstract terms on a subject most people aren't experts in and then count the number of suckers who fell for it.

The owner decided it was worth more to someone else?

Actually, we're getting a new arena for not much more than the cost of refurbishing the old one, and we get to convert an area of downtown that has at various times been a rail yard and a surface parking lot into something much better.

But thank you very much for your concern.
