Now, I'd love to see SMyth retire here and it would be a damn shame if he doesn't, but lets not forget that deserving players like Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Lowe, Fuhr, Anderson, etc all had to move on at some point.

Okay

Assets: Has underrated playmaking skills. Goes to the net with ample vigor and scores the majority of his goals due to supreme determination. Is strong along the boards and displays a sound overall game.

Flaws: His style of play often leads to serious injuries. Doesn't have enough natural talent to become an elite winger.

Career: potential First line winger.

This is true of all hockey players, dawgbone. They get hurt. I think you'd find that Ryan Smyth is not particularly unusual in this respect. He's averaged 72 games per year for the last five seasons and he's averaged the same over his entire career. I don't think that has much bearing on his value.
I realize a lot of players get hurt. Smyth also isn't getting any younger. He's gotten all of these injuries in his 20's.

It's one thing to tie up 10% of your salary in a player like that, it's completely something else to tie up 15-20%. You are never going to get a player who can be guaranteed to be injury-free for a season, but that being said, you hedge your bets.

Like I said, the length is the big thing for me. If the Oilers can get him for a 3 year deal, I'd go in that $5-6mil range. If Smyth wants a 5-6 year deal, it can't be for that kind of coin.

Totally agree with this point.

I think Smitty will be looking at 4.5mill to 5mill per year on a 4 to 5 year deal

Anymore than 5 million for Smyth and we have to let the guy walk.... he's not worth any more than that, no matter what he constantly brings to the table.

Maybe I didn't get my point across well enough yesterday. I meant that if we can get a hometown discount, that a long term contract should be worked out. I agree that he isn't worth 5-6 million over six years, certainly not. My main point however is this: where are the Oilers without this guy? In trouble. Oilers need to sign this player.

Smytty is clutch! ;)

1 Goal 3 assists 4pts and SHOULD have had the 4th assist as he knocked the puck over to Nedved.

Be nice if they give him that one so that he has 5 points!!!

He did everything but carry this team on his back tonight. Too bad he didn't get enough help.

I'd hate to see what we look like without Smytty.

What do you mean? Were you just not watching while he was out?

In the context of this thread which is about hopefully signing Smytty I'm speculating how this team would look if they somehow don't.

Its one thing to have your star player out a couple weeks. It would be quite another for him to be gone. period.

Give him 5.5-6 mil for 5 years, and do it ASAP. What a player.

Best case scenario:

5 years 22.5m

5.5, 5, 4.5, 4, 3.5

I'd be OK with:

3 years 16.5m

I'd be disappointed with:

Anything over 5.5m per year for a <=3 year term OR anything over 5m per year for a 4=< year term.
