I'd rather this team go 10-72 than play like dirty pieces of garbage like Thornton on a nightly basis.
Thornton isn't dirty really. Just plays hard and sticks up for his teammates.

Neal over the phone, Thornton in person.

I'd wager 3 or 4 for Neal. 10 for Thornton.

The worst part about this, aside from the health of Orpik who I hate on the ice but would never wish ill will to, is the PR.

Every time the NHL receives national attention, which this surely will and already has, it's negative. Wake up, NHL PR department. And now the national audience will see people on ESPN, who have no idea what they're talking about, try and talk about hockey - and they will just buy in to whatever they're saying.

Thornton should be in jail! Lifetime ban! Etc... etc...

I'd imagine my level of knowledge in quantum physics is right on par with ESPN's talking heads level of hockey knowledge.

Protip: I spelled 'quantum' wrong when I typed this post.

Yeah, I know he hasn't been. This play is absolutely disgraceful. He should be in ****ing jail let alone suspended.

I don't care what he's done in the past but this just makes him an automatic sack of garbage.

With all due respect I think you're acting way too emotional in this case.

A) Give me the Cup and I'll enjoy my team playing as dirty as they like

B) Orpik has not been a bastion of honor himself

C) Allow for due process

I'd imagine that I have a more informed opinion that most when it comes to the business reality of these sorts of things. The truth is that the NHL has a core base of fans that loves the current product and this core base is more valuable than any potential new fans that the sport can procure. Note that fighting/cheapshots dont necessarily reduce the tendency of new fans to enjoy a product, in fact the effect does not materially alter the attractiveness of the sport to prospective consumers.

Players just don't respect each other's safety out there.

It's a shame.

Disgusting knee by Neal and disgusting play by Thornton.

I can't believe (well, I actually can unfortunately) the amount of people making excuses for Thornton and saying Orpik was exaggerating his injuries.

Neal should get 10 games and Thornton 20...in reality it will likely be 2 and 5.

Neal sorta weaseled through that post-game interview, at least Thornton apologized and seemed to feel bad.

"So you didn't mean to hit him?" - "I mean...[followed by bs]..."

orpik's hit was dirty. he lined-up eriksson and charged him from 20 feet with no interest in the puck. another example of cheap, opportunistic, thoughtless, unprofessional, disrespectful play...which is ever more popular. for anyone who says 'keep your head up' to eriksson, i'd say 'have a little respect for a fellow pro'. there's no 'hockey' play there. he just saw a chance to hurt someone and get a rise out of the stupid faction of the audience. and took it.
end result, a guy unnecessarily concussed a player and ended up with his own concussion. biblical.
(to paraphrase chris rock...i'm not saying the mugging was right, but i understand...)
neal's kick to the head was arguably the worst cheapshop of the night, actually. how that guy gets away with this stuff is amazing.
but this league is so confused... the nhl can't even get out of it's own way.

That sounds vaguely threatening.

I'm not anti-toughness. I don't even like having a defender as small as Del Zotto in the top 6. But cheap shot artists I despise. There was one on every crap team in the NCAA. RIT. UAH. Lake Superior State. Guys that liked to punch when no one was looking. We have one of those types of criminals in our coaching staff.

Not to mention if Orpik answered the bell with Thornton earlier instead of ducking out like a *****, he wouldn't be in the hospital. If you are going to throw hits like that be prepared to step up when someone challenges you.
I feel the same way about marchand as just about any ranger fan, but that knee was dirty, and the fact that he is only getting a phone call hearing (along with the crosby no call trip that led to the whole thing) really shows the bias toward the pens in this league.

So lets see, now we have dirty incidents between the Bruins and the Pens, Isles and the Pens, Flyers and Pens, and Rangers and Pens. Anyone see a pattern here?

Whoa, hold on there. Maybe its not a hockey play to hit Erickson but I don't see how that justifies a slew foot, to specifically render him defenseless, and then punch him in the jaw while orpil is his back.

Maybe Roussel broke the code with his Shaw fight, and maybe Rinaldo wanted to fight as a way to make a statement. But is he then justified in sucker punching Roussel on the ice for not answering the bell?

I don't see any way to condone Thornton's actions. And I've hated orpik since his hit on Cole.

It used to be if a guy wouldn't fight immediately, he'd get some punishment until he answered. Maybe he's gassed after a long shift. Maybe he got slew footed. To me, this is the bertuzzi defense.

Bertuzzi's was worse because it was premeditated, and I genuinely believe he meant to hurt Moore the way he did.

I think Thornton wanted to inflict pain on Orpik, but I don't think he wanted to cause any lasting harm.

One thing about the Thornton/Orpik incident...Bergeron helping bring the stretcher over to Orpik

The guy's pure class and easily one of my favorite players in the league

I didn't mean to suggest that it was justified, only that we shouldn't be surprised when it happens. When you throw boderline dirty hits, throughout the game, and refuse to answer for it when challenged, this is what happens. Add to that the Neal hit, and all the other ticky-tac stuff that we all know the pens get away with behind the play and this is what ends up happening. Teams see that happening throughout the game and get sick of it. There is lots of blame to go around here, and like I said, I am not surprised it happened. Look at the pens recent history now and they seem to be involved in a lot of this , there is a reason for that. They are dirty and they get away with a lot of bs so it boils into this.

I moved down to the alps in Austria for almost two weeks ago now, first for a course with a ridicoulus schedule (from 07 pm to around 08 am and mandatory afterski/party to past midnight). Obviously I have missed a lot of what has happened around the world the past weeks but is it any headlines from the Rangers or NHL itself I really should know besides the Rangers still is a .500 team?

Holy crap, has anyone seen Stephen Weiss' stats for this year? 4 points in 25 games. He has less points than Brian Boyle. They just gave him a ton of money to be their #2 center...

I remember this board clammoring for him to be signed. He's not great but I didn't think he was that bad.....

Meanwhile Filppula is killing it with Tampa.
