If we got rid of a bit more room (maybe trading Hartnell) I'd definitely gun for Vanek. Guy like that on Giroux's wing would be awesome. Maybe add Nikitin/Niskanen (either or) for less than 3M.

Having Vanek around for the first PP unit would also make Simmonds expendable.

I also just realized that with Hartnell gone, he doesn't have a left handed shot to pass to (Giroux I mean) to one time it immediately on goal. Vanek shoots right.

Not to mention the 4.9M of LTIR that Pronger can go on. So possibly 21-22M of space without moving a player, however if Holmgren adds big names like Vanek/Phaneuf or whatever, guys are gone. He'll move other contracts. Plus they need a home for Laughton

Neal gets 5. They might've just did this so he can't appeal

Was Neal considered a repeat offender before this?

I just read on The Score that Mason wants to stay with the Flyers and looks looking for a contract similar to Carey Price. What do you guys think about that? I gotta say I am a little bit worried after some past experiences.

No, not technically since his last suspension was more than 18 months ago. But I wouldn't be surprised if it did inded play into Shanny's decision that he got let off lightly in the 2012 playoffs.

i think the cutoff is 18 months on repeat offender status so probably not. the game 3 incident in 2012 probably is off the books for repeat offender status.

From what I read, No. His last suspension was April '12 which falls outside the CBA rules for the repeat offender defintition.

He's an RFA. He's not getting Price numbers on his next deal.

I don't understand how there is a statute of limitations on being a dirty player.

I think there should be a limit, but I think it should be something longer than 18 months. You can't hold something against a guy from 10 years ago. I think 3 calender years would be a good time frame though.

Shanny said his history was considered.

I can't say I agree with you regarding there being a limit. If a guy has done enough to establish himself as a dirty player, he is a dirty player. Things have to be looked at in context. Like, say a player gets a suspension for a boarding 5+ years prior to another suspension. That, to me, is a whole lot different than a guy who gets suspended for taking runs at other players' heads via elbows, knees, whatever, like Neal has been known to do.

It's not black & white. Just my opinion, but guys like Neal deserve to have whole history considered, regardless of time.

If Mason wants that, you give him 1 year 3 or 4M and make him earn the next big deal

5 for Neal is fair and should send a message.

Well technically it has since Shanny said it played into his decision. The repeat offender status just allows them to suspend a player for more and more games with each reoccuring incident. This is a message to Neal that something else like this within the next 18 months will land him in the press box for an entire month of the season.

I wish he could have received more, but apparently 5 is the max you can get for a phone hearing and I'm surprised they even gave him that much (because I have no faith in the suspension system). So I'll take it I guess.

That's the maximum he could get, so yeah that is good. The disciplinary system in the league is still a joke, but hey, it is what it is.
