Mike Johnson

I want to know what's everybody thinking about Mike Johnson lately. He was great at the beginning of the season but he wasn't an offensive threat for the last few weeks. Of course he's a good defensive forward but I'm hoping to get a much better production from this guy. Will he bounce back? You are BG : If the season ends right now, do you sign him to a contract?

I think he's a great hardworking player with very limited talent. I mean, the guy has hands of stone, but I still like him alot. Very good shot, works hard, finishes most of his checks, and of course a great defensive player. Pretty much the perfect 3rd liner. His start to the season was sort of misleading. Although he isn't scoring like he was earlier, he's just as valuable to the team.

Now I know people are going to throw rocks at me, but I don't believe Bonk's that good of a center in the offensive zone. If you want a little more production from Johnson and Perezhogin, Plekanec might be a good solution.

Oops didn't even notice him there. I just wanted to change his (Big Name) from the first/second C to Sammy's spot.

Johnson's a notoriously streaky scorer, and should probably be thought of in the same category as Bonk and Begin where any goals they get are "bonuses" (okay maybe a bit more than that but not by leaps and bounds). I agree he hasn't looked as good recently as he did at the start of the year, but at least he's rarely a liability on the ice.

They want a shutdown line. That's why that line is there. The key is getting more goals out of the Kovalev-Samsonov combo. Bonk is the strongest part about that line's effectiveness defensively... Plex may be a fine 2 way centre but I'd rather not move Bonk from that position. If anything, trying Johnson as a 2nd line LW and bumping Perez over to RW on the 3rd line would be an interesting mixup....

Johnson-Plex-Kovalev
Samsonov-Bonk-Perez

It's a bit of a throwing darts scenario, but Sammy's played well with defensive centres in the past (last year he was on Peca's line in EDM) while Johnson has played top 6 in Phoenix before. And Kovy becomes the lone star of his line, which he always likes.

I like your idea. Plekanec doesn't have Bonk's size, but he's still an aggressive little dude with good wheels and strong face-offs. But that would probably mean Grabovski on the 2nd line, which seems like a good idea but for the return of the problem of three top centers under 6' 200lbs. Still, I'd be tempted to try it out while Bonk's face heals, as Grabovski has showed more jump on that second line than anyone else all season long (and going back to last year, with Ribeiro).

No chance of BG being able to sing Souray, Markov, AND a "big name" center. Koivu will be the top center as long as he's under contract. Any additions to the forward will be second tier and not first. Signing Markov and Souray to contracts will tip the scales somewhere between $8-10 million per season. Even with Rivet and Niinamaa off the books, that doesn't quite give us enough. Ryder gone (as your lineup goes) helps. Still, just because the ceiling of the cap goes up, doesn't mean the Canadiens will up spending. The team has it's own budget and has to maintain a certain level of flexibility.

If this team is to add an impact player at the center position, more than one current roster winger is going to have to go.

As for the original topic, I like what Mike has brought this year. He's a veteran presence, and has been good with Bonk and Perez. I think it's a formidable third line.
