Defense=Building Block.

So I was thinking, with how poor our D is so far what your guys thoughts are as far as the future. It seems to me we have drafted well in the Defensive category with Staal and Bobby S. I know it's a little early to be speculating (but thats what these boards are for).

Right now we have Tyutin, and Pock. Both young but both fairly promising in my eyes. So my question is with Tyutin, Staal, Bobby S, and possibly Pock, do you guys think our defensive woes will not last for many more seasons?

Look at most teams drafting for Offense, hopefully our Defensive drafts with Lundqvist and Montoya in net will be able to shut down alot of teams. Anyway isn't there a saying like "The best offense is a good defense?"

Anyone wish we still had Max Kondratiev?

Kondratiev was a heartless player with little desire to play in traffic and even less desire to do what he needed to to stay over in the NHL. There is not a day that goes by that I would ever wish we had that kid back. One of the most gutless players I have ever seen, and I am glad he is gone.

In six years...

the Rangers will still have a couple guys over 30, and there will either be trades or guys who don't work out. A defense consisting of Baranka, Bobby S, Sauer, Staal and Tyutin, with each achieving his fullest potential, sounds like a great set of 5, actually having a top 4 defenseman on the third pair, instead of a third pair defenseman in the top 4 (or 2).

I'd say he also had little desire to play in North America.

Nope. Don't want him back. And I really don't think that Pock is a mainstay either.

That's what I was referring to when I said what it took to stay over in the NHL. I just never liked the kid, and at the slightest hint of a forecheck, he would cringe up and give away the puck. He made Poti look like Chris Pronger in terms of physical play. Don't miss him one bit.

Our future definetly looks bright on defense, how many other teams have built around defense though? I wonder what the success rate is for teams focusing on D first. In the end I expect some of them to get traded for older offensive players sadly. But it would be nice to have a Lundqvist/Montoya tandem would be pretty solid.

I'm hoping the D picture looks a lot brighter in a year or two. I expect both Baranka and Staal to fight for spots next season and possibly both making the team. I would actually like to see Ivan get in some NHL games before the end of the season but I'm not holding my breath. Not happy with Malik even with the gaudy +/-. Rachunek has gotten better but he's not someone I'd cry over if he got dumped. Kaspar ditto.

As the others have already pointed out, the attrocious d of today will (should) yield to the bright class of prospects of tomorrow. Ironically enough, as far as the system goes we won't be worrying about defense as much as we will be scrambling to find offense, pretty much the exact opposite of our current club. To add to our impressive defensive corps we will also have an abundance of two-way and defensve minded forwards to fill out the bottom 2 lines. Fortunately for us we will be able to address potential offensive woes with free agents. This is all assuming that we don't deal away our future defense in an attempt at a cup run before Jagr retires.

The D can only get better in the future. The forwards still need to backcheck, (something almost nobody did last night), and the new crop better grow some, and learn to "legally" clear the front of the net.

if pock is going to hold down the same final spot 6 years from now is there even a reason to keep him that long?

Yeah I do, I think he were rushed a bit. We had him under contract and could have left him in Russia another season.

I think he easily would have beaten out Kaspar and Pck, and I belive he would have been a very good fit with Rachunek.

Drats were all energy, anyone remeber his first shift in this league when he tryed play a entire season in one shift? He were pretty physical, and were fast at getting back to start a transition play. Exactly what we need on the 3rd pairing and next to Rachunek.

I don't really like that we weren't more patient with him. Kind of like we were with Marc Savard, he weren't really anything special here, nobody cried rivers when he were traded (except Larry Melnyk! ), and we had no reason for it. Now he is a established 1st line center (30 first line centers in this league, he is one of them). Had we taken it a bit slower with him, he would have had more time to fix his flaws here ect. Craig MacTavish used Savard as a example for not rushing kids recently, said that they thought that what they saw was what they were gooing to get and gave up on him. Had they taken it more slowly Savard would have gotten a fair chance according to him. Drats are diffrent from Savard, he don't have the same potential. But could have filled a important role and defenitly been a influence.

I'd would love to see this, but this is the rangers, and it will never happen.

I like Pock, he can shot and is good offensivly, maybe not as well defensivly, but I'll take him.

Bobby S will be on the team in like 4 yrs. He'll be what 22.

the odds of our defensive corps efer consisting of 6 homegrown players is extreemly small. Not everyone makes it and players do get moved.

The hope is that 6 years from now our Defense is anchored by a core consisting of some combination of Staal, Sauer, Sanguinetti, Baranka, Tyutin, Pock. If we're lucky 4 of those guys will make it, 3 is probably more likely.

I agree that it the odds are nearly 0 that our D would ever consist of 6 homegrowns...yet I think it likely that more than 3 of those 6 will "make it." After all, Tyutin and Pock already have (Pock to a lesser extent) and the other 4 are all going to be at least as good if not better than him. I guess the question is what is the definition of "making it." If a 6th Dman is, then all 6 have a great shot.
