Who was the TSN reporter/analyst?

Jack Todd wrote in today's Gazette that a TSN reporter/analyst said before the season that Souray had no place in the new NHL. Does anybody know who that reporter/analyst was?

(I apologize if this has been discussed in another thread...I haven't seen it.)

My first thought was Pierre McGuire because he's usually putting down the Habs and their players, but he's a smart guy and I find it hard to believe he'd actually say something so brazenly stupid. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows for sure as well...

I think he was alluding to Pierre McGuire, although Pierre never said that about Souray. He did criticize his game, but nothing more than what we've all said (he's weak 5 on 5).

supposedly it wasnt something that was mentioned on air during a broadcast or anything...after reading the article again...it seems as if this Color Commentator from TSN actually CALLED Jack Todd and said this to him...

here is what the quote reads...

Early this season, a certain TSN colour commentator who shall remain nameless phoned to say that "Sheldon Souray can't play in the NHL."

and here is what Souray said last night about that...

And before we left the Canadiens room last night, Souray summoned me back. "Remember that guy who said I couldn't play in the NHL any more?" he asked.

"When I read that in your column, that was my motivation for this year."

here is the complete article...

sounds like the clap-trap Healy likes to spout about any given Hab on any given night

With all due respect, we all thought the same thing at one time this year. Especially at the beginning of the year, Rivet and Sourey were making mystakes left and right.

It is Pierre McGuire. Todd mentioned it earlier this season, during one of the Gazette podcasts.

They still are; it doesn't mean they can't play in the new NHL.

Are you sure? I'd put my money on Healy.

Todd saying that , doesn't mean McGuire did. He probably heard something vague on the forecast show and used it, attibuted it to McGuire.

I'm almost certain. Even though I am a general McGuire fan, I absolutely hate the way that he declares certain things with such certainty. He is almost too opinionated, as far as I'm concerned.

I've heard McGuire talk about Souray on Mtl radio. Basically he speaks well of him but says he gets exposed when they use outside speed on him, which is true. He compliments the rest of his game though. Souray's becoming a classic example of how you focus on what a guy does rather than what he doesn't.

It was definitely Pierre McGuire.

I had to go back and check where I heard it, and it was actually during this podcast. http://habsinsideout.com/puckcast/

Choose PuckCast number 3, and click "Podcast: Listen Now."

It is hard to say what time he said it at, because my player doesn't display the time. Judging from the bar at the bottom, it is a bit beyond the half way mark of the show. Jack Todd says: "Pierre McGuire of TSN called me before the season started and was hollering about how 'Sheldon Souray can't play in this league anymore.' "

T. keep in mind, it's Todd saying it, not McGuire.

The fact that Todd says that "Mcguire called [me] before the season," not once, but twice (in the podcast, and in today's article, albeit as "anonymous" this time) suggests to me that McGuire did indeed make this comment. What people say to people off the record certainly could be different from what they say in public, that's why McGuire may sound more guarded and positive about Souray when he talks to TEAM990 or CJAD.

Of course, it could be that Todd is greatly exaggerating what McGuire actually said to him. But regardless, it was asked who Todd is talking about when he mentions, "TSN reporter," and from that piece of audio, it is Pierre McGuire.

Jack Todd is not reliable. I would say he's stretching the truth of what was said.

But surely not as over the top as Michel Bergeron.

True, it's Todd we're talking about here. But it's also McGuire and can't you imagine him saying that behind closed doors? Doesn't surprise me.

Jackt Todd is a fine writer. But his credibility isn't exactly top-notch. I find him to be a pretty poor journalist to be quite honest. But he is a really good writer so eh.

He doesn't do much writing, so I find that hard to gauge.

The Habs should put McGuire on the payroll. The players he's ripped on (Souray, Huet, Bonk) have practically carried the team this year.

I wish he'd make some cockamamie comments about Samsonov and Kovalev next.
