Do we hate Aaron Ward?

Aaron Ward has come in for some criticism on these boards, but he's also had some doses of praise, so this little aside on Sam Weinman's blog took me by surprise:

Quote:
Anyway, somehow the conversation turned to Rangers fans on internet message boards, as well as on this blog.
Ward said he doesn’t read them, but “I understand they hate me.”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“Not really,” I said. “Although everyone’s targeted at one time or another.”
Which is true, of course. Myself included.
Anyway, more from the Garden later….
http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/

So do we hate Aaron Ward? Personally, I don't, far from it. He's not even my least favourite defenceman on the Rangers, though I'd have to say, Pöck and Toots apart, I can't say I'm particularly attached to any of 'em.

I'm fine with him...

was expecting more, as some others likely were. He's been OK. Has had his ups and downs. I do hope there's another top four defenseman here next season so he can be moved to the third pair. Just get a feeling that he's on the decline.

I think he's been quite solid and was a good signing. The kind of defenseman the Rangers needed. Moreso than a Rozsival or Malik type.

So, no...why would he be hated? At his worst, he's just been invisible. At his best, he's played good defense and played physically.

The conclusion here is that Rangers fans are stupid.

edit: Fletch, I ideally see him as a 2nd pairing guy, at least for next year, etc. It'd be nice to get a little better partner for Tyutin and use them as the 1st pairing, with Ward/whoever on the 2nd and then relegate the Malik and Rozsival types to the third pairing.

I hear you, Levitate...

that could work too, but like I said, I just get a sense that his skills will decline quickly and we may be clamoring for him to have less ice time. Saw a bit of that this year, and I really can't point to anything concrete other than a gut feeling.

Wow...low self-esteem for Ward there. I wonder what boards he is reading to get an idea like that.

.

He's made a few bone headed plays, but throughout the season which player doesn't?

I don't think that he's been that far off from where he has played in the past, I just think that the when the team also suffers from mental mistakes things are difficult

you want to rely on your D partner and he on you, but if you are both going to make mistakes it shows and I think that he's suffered a bit through that here.

I'm seriously at a loss, I'm not sure how players like Rosie and Malik constantly catch crap, where a guy like Ward skates by (pun intended) without much at all.

I'll say it, I don't hate the guy but he consistently makes one or two glaring errors per game. I'm not sure if any of you follow the EPL but he reminds me so much of Mikael Silvestre a defensive back for Man Utd. He's a servicable defenseman that is solid for most of the time but guarenteed once or twice a game he makes a huge mistake that gives the other team a chance to score.

Honestly I'd rather see Pöck in the lineup but that's just personal preference.

Marek Malik should read the boards more...now that's a guy who is hated.

The reason why Ward gets a pass, atleast from me, is because when they signed him, I envisioned him as a #6 d-man at best...so my expectations weren't very high.

I think he has exceeded my expecations, AND has taken Fedor Tyutin under his wing and made him a much better d-man. So I'm happy with Ward. The real problem is with the Rangers having a bunch of 4-6 d-men trying to play 1-3 spots.

I like Ward, especially when he uses the free hand to slam someone to the ice.

That was probably Marek Malik he was talking to, not Aaron Ward. Just a mixup.

Personally, I don't hate him..He's serviceable, that's about it...

OTOH, I hated his signing becasue I think we should have done better (meaner, more physical) be it Witt, Mckee or even Chara....But, his contract is acceptable, I guess..

His play has slid somewhat since the beginning of the season. Overall I like him better than some others just because he can play a physical game without going to the penalty box all the time. Positionally he's been solid--and he works well with Tyutin (the most important D currently on the team)--but he does make his share of boneheaded plays. I'd give him a C+ or a B for his season so far.

I don't mind him, though I do think there were some serious misconceptions about what kind of player he was/how good he is.

I think anyone disappointed by Ward, most likely had far too high of expectations for him.

I like the guy, he work hard and plays tough for the most part.

I do think he was the "consolation prize" after the likes of McKee et al went and signed elsewhere, but I've got no problem with Ward.

Solid and Steady on a very good team. To much for him to shine on this lack of defense

Ward really doesn't bother me. I think Toots is playing alot more physical this year alongside Ward, Kaspars hipcheck influence has probably helped that as well. Overall though the guy does make some mistakes here and there but so do most #3-#4 D men in the league. I think we will see Wards true value if we make it to the playoffs, he seems to be one of those players who turn their game up a notch when playoff time comes.

I don't hate him at all. In fact, he's one of the few Rangers this season who I haven't been frustrated with at some point during the season. I'm sure a lot of the things he brings to the team don't show up on the ice during games because he's doing a lot in the dressing room in between periods.

But that's not to say that I wouldn't mind seeing him bumped to the third pair if Sather acquires one or two defensemen over the summer who can fit better on the top two pairs.

I also remember Carolina fans saying that Ward is basically a player who will follow the general status of the team throughout the season, so if the team is really on a roll and playing well, Ward will be playing well and looking good. But if the team is playing poorly and losing, don't expect Ward to stand out with great defensive play.

The same probably goes for a fair number of decent NHLers but hey that's what they said.
