Benoit Pouliot is this year's obligatory enigma

Seems like every year we reserve at least one roster spot for a skilled former 1st round pick whose disappearing act made previous teams pull their hair out.

2013 - Benoit Pouliot
2012 - Derick Brassard
2011 - Wojtek Wolski
2010 - Alex Frolov
2009 - Chris Higgins
2008 - Nik Antropov
2007 - Marcel Hossa
2006 - Marcel Hossa
2005 - Marcel Hossa

Antropov worked out pretty well and not re-signing him was a decent-sized mistake. Brassard looked great under Torts but has reverted back to his old ways. The other guys, well, nothing but hair pulling. You could probably include Erik Christensen and Enver Lisin but they weren't first round picks.

Sometimes we have more than one enigma... certainly Christensen, Lisin, Zherdev deserve to be on the island of misfit toys.

Who could forget the "shootout" 4th line of Wolski-Christensen-Zuccarello?

How is Brassard an enigma in 2012 if he played well?

I had high hopes for Hossa. He finished the 2006-07 very strong, but never really built on that.

Can you really limit it to JUST Pouliot this year?

Nice call. I was hoping some posters could help fill in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

That's the enigma? (Not been near before or after?) A technically superskilled player with obvious defensive shortcomings that thrived under Torts, and under Torts only.

As a defenseman Malakhov might have been the banner boy for enigmatic players. That guy had all the tools seriously. Skating, big shot, huge frame, strong as hell, could make some serious finesse passes and subtle moves with the puck. But you all actually watched him actually play the game... yeeeeesh

Meh, I thought he was severely underrated by Ranger fans.

Honestly, I think Pouliot would make a good winger for Tavares. He can make some deft plays witht he puck, can skate well, and likes to shoot. He needs to be in the top 6, because he brings nothing to the bottom six... and honestly I don't think he has the vision to playmake in the top 6, nor the willingness to get to the tough areas to score in the top 6.

Put him with a guy that will draw tons of attention, make amazing passes onto his tape in high percentage areas, and wins tons of board battles and make quick plays to the front of the net, and maybe Pouliot becomes the next Moulson, Parenteau.

On this team, where no-one can go tape to tape, he's just a worthless floater playing on a grinding line.

and Islander, Devil, Flyers, Penguins fans? and all their coaches too !?! I liked the guy, and was super excited when he came on board. But I can't think of any games he literally took over, or just emerged as a lockdown guy. The tools were there for it though

Malkov had 1/2 a good season as a Ranger 2001-02. After the Olympics he phoned it in.

Other enigmas that come to mind;

1988-89: Igor Liba
1994-95: Petr Nedved TOD I

Kovalev was an enigma besides the 94 and 95 playoffs.

I'm gonna catch heat for this but I don't understand the Pouliot hate. He's the perfect third liner. He has very nice offensive skills and he plays hard every shift and finishes checks. He does take some dumb penalties once in a while but I have to imagine that can be coached out of his game. He's definitely frustrating though because he's not a good finisher from what I've seen of him.

For all the hate he receives, he has been clutch. SO winner against Calgary with the nice assist to Hagelin on his goal; awesome play to Brassard for the GWG against Detroit; GWG in a big game against the Islanders.

To me it just looks like he's trying TOO hard out there. Maybe a result of not getting regular shifts most of the year. All I know is that for $1M I've been really happy with what he's provided

Didn't he get hurt after going on a scoring pace of like 10 goals in 13 games?

I would have no issue with BP if he didn't take so many dumb ****ing penalties. I am willing to bet that his penalties have cost us more goals against then his EV + PP time goals for.

Huh? He was a pretty important defenseman for the Penguins and then was solid for us until the injuries.
