Really disappointed this could easily be a one and done for Colton.

Most reports indicated Fiddler would play this road trip so if he's on track, which seems likely based on him practicing, he's probably back in.

Ruff can't really justify benching Roussel or Garbutt. Both of played well, and in some games they've been Dallas' best players. Cole and Horcoff ... more so Cole ... have been playing well. Cole I'd say actually has been playing quite well, and Horcoff has been just solid.

The only person that deserves to sit is Whitney .... but that seems unlikely. Maybe Chiasson takes a seat? He hasn't been great, but I don't think he deserves it.

IDK ... just seems like it's time to call PHX ... even if his value is low. Move on from Whitney and give the younger depth a chance ... especially Sceviour.

Benn-Seguin-Nuke
Cole-Eakin-Chiasson
Horcoff-Peverley-Sceviour
Roussel-Fiddler-Garbutt
Jeffrey

You still have Morin, Mueller, and Glennie who look like competent NHLers right now in a depth role. I think they're deep enough right now. Even younger guys like McKenzie and Ritchie wouldn't be out of place if injuries became an issue.

Hard but not impossible, especially considering Ruff's reluctance to bench a vet. If you can't take out Whitney, who? Chiasson? I don't think you can touch the top line obviously, and Garbutt and Roussel unfortunately are the best guys on the ice some nights (nothing against them, teams best players need to be better some nights).

He did play the style of game I love from lower line players. I much prefer a guy like him and Roussel who create chances and keep the other team honest. It's a huge upgrade over the useless, handless types we've had in the past. I'm not expecting big numbers from these guys, but I like that opposing coaches have to worry about a bad line change or lazy play opening up ice for them because of their speed and desire to take the puck to the net.

What really annoys me about the Sceviour situation is we have basically fumbled it. He is going to be a UFA unless we sign before he his free agency. If he plays well other teams are going to take notice and he would be foolish to sign an extension unless we give him a good deal of money. If we don't play him at all he would be foolish to stick around unless he gets no other offers, which seems unlikely with such great AHL production.

Color me not surprised on Gaunce being called up. He's been playing great and is a defensive force.

Though..has Gaunce gone through waivers yet this season? For some reason I don't remember if he did and want to say he hasn't.

I think he did when he was sent down at the beginning of the season

He was through waivers, 99% sure of it.

Rome is hurt. Gaunce brought up as insurance, especially with the number of games they have in a short time span.

I'd love to see Gaunce in tonight, especially against his old team but I bet we don't.

I don't know how the hell you do it, but I'd prefer they keep Pevs at center with Cole and Sceviour.

Well scratch Garbutt when Jeffery or Fiddler is healthy and just after the Christmas break/no trade period, move Fiddler along to whomever needs him. They cannot send Sceviour down. That would be a travesty and diametrically opposed to the concept of earning your keep when given the opportunity.

I thought Jeffery was a scratch???

Of the two: would you send Garbutt down or would you trade Fiddler?

Or would you trade Jeffery?

This topic needs its own thread.

Heika just posted this:

Quote:
Stars center Vernon Fiddler has missed six games with an upper body injury, but he could return to play Saturday at San Jose.

“Vern’s getting real close,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. “We’re going to put him through a real good workout today, even in a more physical sense. He hasn’t been in a full practice, and tomorrow’s plan is to get him in a full practice. If he can get through that, I think he’ll really be available to play on Saturday.”

Fiddler is on IR. If the Stars activate him, they can either send a player to the minors or put defenseman Aaron Rome on IR.

I still haven't changed my opinion about trading Fiddler. It makes the team weaker, and he's a valuable asset. He should only be moved at the deadline when/if Dallas' playoff hopes are gone.

Even though I like what I see from Pevs at center, I'd rather play him on the wing than move Fiddler just because of his position when there are weaker options on wing that should go first.

What seems to be true IMO is that Ruff has found (and should not **** with) the top line. I feel like Eakin-Chiasson play well together at ES and on the PK, Cole-Pevs-Sceviour has been a damn good line and at minimum I'd like to see Cole and Secviour stick together, and finally I think Fids and Roussel have some nice chemistry. Garbutt obviously looks good with Fids as well, but he's got to be the odd man out.

It's too soon to realistically believe Whitney or Horcoff are getting benched or traded.

Maybe ...

Roussel-Fiddler-Peverley
Cole-Horcoff-Sceviour

OR

Cole-Peverley-Sceviour
Horcoff-Fiddler-Roussel

In reality ... the obvious, easiest move here is to waive Jeffrey and bench Garbutt. Jeffrey likely clears (this gives the Pens the option to take him back an assign him to W-B or they allow Dallas to keep him and he goes to Texas) and Garbutt becomes the healthy scratch.

Then the next obvious move is to just slide Sceviour into Garbutt's old spot with Roussel and Fiddler.

When all is said and done ... I'm counting on Nill and Ruff to keep it simple. Maybe they will go back to the old man line though with Whitney-Horcoff-Cole. That'd be nice to see Pevs up with Eakin and Chiasson. Then you have that rock solid 4th line in Roussel-Fiddler-Sceviour that can play regular shifts against most lines.

Also ... the other potential move here is that Nill truly does still really like Jeffrey, and he doesn't want to give him up. Like Heika mentioned, Rome on IR would delay any move forcing Dallas' hand. When Rome was healthy, Fortunus goes down and Dallas could carry 2 forward scratches in Jeffrey and Garbutt.

Dallas hasn't carried 2 most games this year. They either had 8 D or were leaving a roster spot open. Ultimately, I think Nill would prefer the open roster spot and carrying 1 F and 1D extra. I guess that will depend on how valuable Jeffrey is to him.

Whitney with Eakin and Roussel? That seems like a total mismatch of style of play. Glad to see Garbutt as the odd man out for whatever reason.
