I said it at the time too, but Pitlick should've never made the jump to the AHL when he did. Another year in Medicine Hat would've been great for him IMO.

I liked Martindale quite a bit in his draft year and thought he should've turned pro when he did, but there were also a lot of young rookies in OKC and he ended up playing most of the year in the ECHL. That's not to say he was a victim of circumstance either. Sometimes guys just can't make the jump to pro hockey. Most of the highly ranked players available at that time of the draft have done just as poorly.

Stan Galiev - Has been splitting time between the AHL and ECHL since turning pro (most of it in the ECHL)

Justin Shugg - Same as Galiev

Danny Biega - Just turned pro this year, but the offense he was becoming known for in college is nowhere to be found.

Brock Beukeboom - Kinda fell off the map after his CHL days ended last year. Currently playing for the University of PEI.

Max Kitsyn - Went back to Russia where he struggled and is now doing the same in the AHL this year.

Jakub Culek - Having a decent ECHL season, but hasn't cracked the Sens AHL squad yet.

Matt Mackenzie - Bubble AHL/ECHL defenseman

In all honesty, Michael Bournival was one of the few players ranked in the late 2nd-early 3rd range who was both available at the time of the Martindale pick and has covered the bet so far. Jordan Weal and Teemu Pulkinen were both drafted much later, but ranked in the area at the time and are having great seasons with the Monarchs and Griffins respectively, but we already have undersized forwards tearing up the AHL who can't get a sniff at the NHL.

Just look at our 2010 draft. The year after their draft all of these guys were looking like amazing picks.

Tyler Pitlick goes 62 points in 56 games in the WHL after his draft year. Goes pro and his production just hits the skids. Looking like a 4th liner at best.

Curtis Hamilton put up 82 points in 62 games year after his draft in the WHL. Three years into his pro career and he's pretty much busted flat out.

Ryan Martindale 83 points in 65 games. Then can't even stick in the AHL in his first pro year and like Hamilton is pretty much a bust.

This team has had too many prospects make it the OKC only to fall off the map completely. It's happening to Klefbom this year. So is it just that we are making bad pick after bad pick? Or is there the wrong coaching staff there to properly develop these players?

I imagine it is a combination of both.
Said it numerous times as of late, these guys never had to develop much in Juniors because they had size to dominate and get results. Now they take the next level and they aren't playing against boys and can't dominate, so now they have to spend time trying to figure out how to stick around.

As for Klefbom he's a bit of a different case as he is learning a new games and coming off of major surgery.

ALL of our prospects look great until they actually hit the taint that is the Oilers organization.

Difference is these guys are actually physical and have an offensive upside. Imo this translates into the Nhl better cause they won't play soft. Most of our prospects either have a soft but skilled game or just push things around. These guys are scoring quite well, aren't afraid to fight and hit like trucks. It makes me excited

None of those guys were close to being physical.

Pitlick is the only one who is now and it took him a long time to get to that point.

Moroz is the most physical prospect (that can actually play) we've had in a while.

Hamilton was never physical. He was a big body, but didn't play with a physical edge.

Hamilton isn't physical at all, he was a good two-way player in junior, but defence in major junior is a whole lot different from defence in professional hockey. Pitlick is physical but not as much as Moroz, and his hockey IQ is at least 2 notches below Khaira or Chase. Lander wasn't a physical prospect, but has changed that during his time in North America, and low and behold! He's holding is own in the NHL!

For those watching Moroz often, is he starting to look like an okay pick?

Another interesting player to follow will be Bogdan Yakimov (EDM), who will center the second line. Yakimov is having a solid rookie season with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL where he’s showing that he can contribute on the score sheet, defend well, and win faceoffs. Yakimov’s KHL deal will run out after this season and he has already confirmed that he is going to head to North America and has no problems with playing in the AHL for the Edmonton Oilers’ affiliate team.

Here's to hoping Yakimov can become a Hanzal type player.

I didn't know it was for sure that Yakimov was coming over next year. Really interested to see how he does and with how little centre prospects we have he should get all the opportunity.

That's great to hear, I didn't realize that he had leadership abilities as well as high end skill.

Honestly I'd settle for an Artem Anisimov, I think his speed/skating is going to prevent him from being a long term top 6 forward, but everything else about his game will make him a high end bottom 6 forward who can play in the top 6 if injuries arise.

Imagine a world where all our prospects somehow panned out to their potential.
Yakimov - solid 2 way center.
Khaira - solid power forward.
Roy - sharp offensive player like Hemsky
Chase - gritty offensive center.
Moroz - top end bottom 6 grinder.
Nurse - #1 D
Klefbom - top 2 D
Ekblad? - # 1 D

That's a ****ing dynasty team right there combined with our core. But let's not get too excited. cough cough Schremp etc.

Think this is is how it goes...

Yakimov - 4th line C / bust
Khaira - 4th line F / bust
Roy - 3rd / 4th liner but IR too often to stick
Chase - Buchberger V 2.0
Moroz - Moreau V 2.0
Nurse - Brent Seabrook
Klefbom - 4th/5th d-man like Smid... Marincin is the better prospect IMO...
Ekblad? - Franchise #1

One guy you are missing is John Mccarron.. think he is a diamond in rough... good physical fourth liner type...

Interesting. However, Yakimov & Khaira are more likely to succeed than Chase and Moroz. I think Moroz is more likely to bust than succeed unfortunately.
