My guess would be the name Lizard Kings came from Jim Morrison's nickname 'The Lizard King'.
If you don't know who Jim Morrison is, you really don't know much about music. If you need a refresher, he was the lead singer for The Doors.
I know the guys who named the team. That's exactly where it came from. That said, it still sucks.
On December 31 of one year I can't remember, the Columbus Chill of the ECHL wore black-and-white spotted unis and called themselves the Columbus Mad Cows. "Mad Cows" was also one of the top names submitted by fans for the CBJ in the name-the-team contest. See, it could have been worse!
Best team names:
Avalanche, Bruins, Flyers, Hurricanes, Lightning, Panthers, Predators, Sharks, Thrashers, Wild
Worst team names:
Blue Jackets, Canadiens, Capitals, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Ducks, Oilers, Penquins, Senators
Teams with names that don't seem to fit:
Rangers... seems like it should be a team out west. (good for a team in Portland)
Sabres... If they're only going to have a slug-buffalo on the logo, then what's the point of calling the team Sabres. More it's a problem with the logo than with the name.
Your a piece of work. Bruins is a better name then Canadiens? Give me a break
It seems most team names have some sort of background and in a lot of case we don't know about it if we're not familiar with the city. I guess that's why bad names usually stand out better than good ones.
I'll no doubt get flamed on this one, but my all time favourite name (that never was) was the proposed Rocky Mountain Extreme when the Nordiques moved to Denver.
I really hated the idea of a team named after a kids' movie but began to not even notice the name after a while, sadly.
I totally agree on Buffalo not using the name in the logo... the name Buffalo Sabres is fine, and the idea of incorporating the city name is cool too, but if there's no sword why not just call them the Buffalo HC? (Speaking of European teams )
The Rimouski Oceanic are named as such because Rimouski is the oceanography capital of Quebec. The name sounds cool but that's a very strange reason to name a team!
Whalers is a neat name too, I agree... apparently partially named as such for the WHA at the beginning. (The logo was clever when they moved to Hartford too... and when it was flipped on its side it made for an awesome Binghamton Whalers logo.... sort of off topic here!)
