Seems like there's actually a decent amount of 1st round talent, but I dunno about high end. In 2015 there is a kid named Jack Eichel that could be a nice consolation prize for those that miss out on McDavid. Sounds like he could be a helluva player.

I wouldn't worry about kaoanen's d game not being as developed. That part about him being 22 made a difference there. Not to mention when we drafted him it wasn't because of his defensive side, which really wasn't hyped. We were desperate for offense, and Sami had been a bit if a late bloomer who had been overlooked. The fact he was already a pro and had developed a responsible side was a bonus. I'm sure his boy will be pick it up.

McDavid looked fantastic in Canada's win over Germany today. Kid can fly.

He also stood out as a great passer on the powerplays. Some might argue though that he's looking for the perfect pass even a little too much in situations where a shot would be the better choice.

I do get your point that focusing on the draft at this point in the season (because the team is struggling) is frustrating to say the least, but it's not unusual on HF. Many team boards have draft threads going already. I took a quick look and teams like Boston, MTL, Wash, etc.. all have them. Also, as the WJC's are going on, it spurs more of that discussion.

I read an article where Karlsson's dad said the youngest brother is the most talented one in the family.

Well we took Zach Boychuk before Erik Karlsson in that draft so we'll probably end up taking Glen Wesley's son before him in this draft.

Pretty much all of the post goal celebrations in that video were ridiculous and over the top. Not a fan.

I think the Canes have a really good shot at drafting high this summer. I think a top 4 pick is well within reach.

The Isles and Sabres are the only teams I see with absolutely little chance of passing the Canes in the standings.

Christ guys we are ONE point out of a playoff spot with every single one of our top forwards playing unsustainably badly. We've seen this movie a million times. Eric will turn elite in January, and we're in a much better playoff position now than the hole we typically have dug ourselves into at this point. It's more likely we make the playoffs than we pick top five, and it's not even close.

We may have seen it before, but here's how all of those times ended up:

2006: Missed playoffs, #11 Draft pick
2007: Missed playoffs, #14 Draft pick
2008: Made Playoffs
2009: Missed playoffs, #7 Draft pick
2010: Missed playoffs, #12 Draft pick
2011: Missed playoffs, #8 Draft pick
2012: Missed playoffs, #5 Draft pick

History, nor how the team is currently playing supports that it's more likely the Canes will make the playoffs versus anything. The issue isn't Eric Staal being cold, the issue is they've won ONCE in their last 8 games, they are struggling to score goals, have suspect goaltending and have been very inconsistent all season.

I don't think they'll be bad enough to get a top 5 pick again. I get that they are only 1 point out of a playoff spot, but there are now 4 other teams in front of them. Assuming the Canes will get hot but all four of those teams won't is being optimistic.

Aren't they usually like 8 points out of a playoff spot at this point?

I know in 2010 they were 1 spot out, 9th in the east and were 4 points out, but with 3 games in hand, but can't say in other years. I'll see if I can dig it up.

At the rate the Metro is going, it might be better to have 2 points versus 3 games in hand.

Ok, I did this quickly so I may have to go back and edit. I used standings on Dec 31 for all of these except last year where I used standings on Feb 28th (about the same ratio of games played vs. full season):

Surprisingly, the Canes were IN a playoff spot all but a couple of seasons at this point in the season since 2006.

2006: 5th in the east, 5 points in a playoff spot
2007: 6th in the east, 4 points in a playoff spot
2008: 8th in the east, 2 points in a playoff spot
2009: Last in the east, 15 points out
2010: 9th in east, 6 points out: 38 pts/36 gp; MTL 44 pts/39gp
2011: Last in the east, 10 points out
2012: 7th in the east, 1 point in a playoff spot

Ok, I went back and double checked and made a few minor edits. Net is that only 1 season (2010) were the Canes right on the edge but still 6 out (but with 3 Games in hand). Two seasons (2009 and 2011)they were well out of it by now. The other 4 seasons, the Canes were in a playoff spot at this point in the season.

2008 they made it and last year I'll chalk up to injuries in a short season. Doesn't seem to be one distinct pattern, other than turning it on in the last few months of the season (minus last year).

Either way, I don't think it's time to throw in the towel on the season, nor do I think it's too early to start considering the draft.

I never think it's too early to think about the draft. We are at best a bubble playoff team. Not the worst team but we might as well talk about it since I highly doubt we'll clinch a spot or get eliminated with more then five games left.

Unless we don't win another game lol.

I agree, no real pattern other than missing a lot more than they make it no matter where they stood at this point in the season. Other than the two seasons they absolutely stunk coming out of the gate though, the data really doesn't support that they turned it on the 2nd half of the season.

06/07: 1st half: 46 points; 2nd half: 42 points
07/08: 1st half; 44 points; 2nd half; 48 points
08/09: 1st half: 47 points; 2nd half; 50 points
09/10: 1st half: 29 points; 2nd half; 51 points
10/11: 1st half: 48 points; 2nd half; 43 points
11/12: 1st half: 35 points; 2nd half; 47 points
12/13: 1st half: 29 points; 2nd half; 13 points

And right now they are on pace for only 41 points by the half way mark in the season, so that doesn't bode well no matter how much the metro sucks.

I think they tend to turn it on towards the middle of February more than anything. They've put together some pretty awful Januarys if I recall.

Chances are we'll finish out of the playoffs but just high enough in the standings where we won't get a bang-on top prospect.

I don't feel like going back through all that data and doing the calculations to say whether that is true or not

I don't have any problem with people assuming we'll be bad this year. We'd currently have the 8th overall pick, and our division is underperforming just as much as we "are."

I'd love for us to pick up the pace. But this team got the 5th overall pick, and didn't add anything too too overwhelming (and our best addition is currently playing as well as he could possibly be playing).

The fact that some people think it's completely unthinkable that someone thinks they'll do worse in the second half rather than better is silly to me. I don't know. The fact that people are getting ******** over someone thinking we have a chance at a top five pick seems optimistic.
