Thanks to poster NMF78 who PMed me a compiled list of scoring in the top Soviet/Russian domestic league since 1947.

Hawkey Town 18 compiled the voting records for the Soviet Player of the Year and Triffy compiled the Soviet League All Stars a few years ago.

We now have a very good resource for Soviet domestic hockey.

I'm currently adding the Czech Golden Hockey Stick voting, but it's a slow go to convert it to text format from the website.

Still looking for a new source for the Europe-wide Golden Stick voting after the old site went down.

I definitely recall the MVP was Ranford. I've heard that repeated dozens of times since.

Adding Izvestia Golden Stick voting (top 10s) to my data requests.
looks like BM67 was able to find that for you.

hopefully you keep up with the golden stick voting beyond 1980.

also, for soviet mvp voting I know it may not be extremely meaningful but we should include the 2nd and 3rd teams where they are available, plus the mvp results beyond 5th in the years that we have them (currently 1970-1980 but a special online source might be getting back to me with even more comprehensive results than that) - also the "top-34 players" or whatever they call it on chidlovski are legit according to this source, they were an actual "thing" so they would be worth mentioning, they are, if nothing more, an indication of which players were the upper crust of the soviet league; the guys who could have made somewhat of an NHL impact each year.

Well, feel free to post all that in hfboards-friendly format and it will be included. For now, I'm working on finishing the Czech Golden Stick voting

one thing about international tournaments - the olympics up to 1988 were just world championships held in an olympic year. I consider them all the same thing - they should probably just be bunched together... what does everyone else think?

Still looking for:

Full voting results for the Goldpucken award (Swedish player of the year)
Full voting results for the Izvestia Golden Stick awarded to the best player in Europe

Full voting results for any of the other European awards would be appreciated, but I think those are the two big ones.

No, but I don't have much time to look.

It could be somewhere in the below link (run it through google translate). It's a cool forum with a treasure trove of Soviet/Russian stats, info, old newspaper scans, game reports, etc.

Here are some more complete WHC all star voting results from some of the years. Sadly only few but maybe these tell something about the process. In 71 and 72 Vikulov was selected to the all star without being in top 3 of votes. in 72 Kharlamov and Jakushev played the same position and gathered 134 votes together with only 121 voters. So it seems that some of the voters wasn´t that strict about the positioning. Still the official team was gathered by positions. Or thats atleast my best guess. I did this quickly by just copying the names so the names are written in Finnish. Source Finnish hockey books.

Are those Soviet All-Stars teams League A-S or yearly Soviet A-S? Many european country counted national team achievements to their yearly awards/All-Stars teams. I don´t know what was the Soviet way.

Edit. Nevermind there was a link to thread about that...

I actually don´t remember from where I have copy pasted these to my notepads, but the original source is book 100 let českého hokeje (Hundred years of Czech hockey without google translate ). IIRC There is even PDFs of those late 60´s seasons sowewhere in internets.

(I don´t remember why I copy pasted only these to my notepads)

I've recently found a site that has all of the raw Czech Golden Stick voting data. Not just the top-10 placements, the actual raw data. It is interesting stuff. Here you go:

http://avlh.sweb.cz/Zlata-hokejka.pdf

Here are the records for 1968-69 through 1981-82 (the end of Milan Novy's prime and the part of the record that I personally care about the most). Someone who wants to post the rest here for posterity should that Czech link go down, be my guest:

A few thoughts on the above:

- what an interesting voting system they must have had. It is vastly more spread out than any NHL voting results from any era, ever. My guess is that the voters submitted ordered lists that were at least ten deep, possibly deeper. That's the only way I could see generating such deep, balanced and diverse voting results.

- we need to keep the strangeness of their system (from a north american) point of view in mind when looking at the results. The voting shares of the winner are much, much smaller than people accustomed to looking at NHL voting totals will find comfortable, but they are what they are.

- Jan Suchy's 17.9% of the Golden Stick vote in 1968-69 is the single highest individual share through the end of the Golden Generation (I haven't calculated the percentages for every season).

- 1974-75 featured a virtual 6-way tie for first place, with the winner (Vladimir Martinec) only collecting 7% of the vote. Very strange.

I've done a little calculation of "voting shares" among the 70's Czech greats based on the above. It was laborious because the number of votes available changed from season-to-season, but I've got it done for the field of players who are of most interest to me. So here it is:

Regarding the centers:

Quote:
Vaclav Nedomansky: 13.5, 13.5, 10.9, 9.4, 8.6, 6.5

Ivan Hlinka_______: 16.3, 11.5, 9.5, 7.6, 5.6, 5.1, 5.1, 5.0, 4.5, 2.7, 0.4

Milan Novy________: 15.3, 13.6, 13.4, 11.4, 10.5, 7.8, 6.3, 4.2, 2.1, 0.9

Peter Stastny______: 11.5, 4.8, 2.8, 2.4, 1.5
- Peter Stastny's single Golden Stick win was won with a relatively weak (for a 1st place finish) 11.5% of the vote. Other than that, he never eclipsed 5% of the voting totals. There is still a reasonable argument that Stastny would have been an excellent NHL player had he come over a year earlier and thus played his Golden Stick season in north america, but I think we can put to bed the idea that he played more than one high-end season in Europe.

- Ivan Hlinka's career year must have been very good, but beyond his top 3-4 seasons, his voting totals are not impressive.

- Vaclav Nedomansky is a tough one to judge. He led the Czech league in scoring three out of four seasons in the early seventies, but never won the Golden Stick, though his voting results are nonetheless impressive. He also has what look to be the first three years of his peak cut off by these results, as he has 1st, 2nd and 3rd place points finishes in the 1965-66, 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons. And then, of course, he came over to north america (WHA) at the age of 30 and was good, and later on even led the Dead Things in scoring in the NHL at the age of 34. How to quantify the parts of Big Ned's career that aren't captured in the above is anyone's guess.

- Novy doesn't appear to have had a huge high peak (his 2nd and 3rd best results came against diminished competition in the early 80's and should maybe be fudged down a bit compared to 70's stars), but his sustained peak value is strong. He was among the best players in the league for a long time. His 7th best season in vote shares came in 1974-75 when he was in a virtual 6-way tie for 1st place. Not bad for a seventh best season.

Regarding the defensemen:

Quote:
Jan Suchy______: 17.9, 15.7, 13.9, 2.1, 1.4, 0.6, 0.05

Frantisek Pospisil: 15.8, 14.5, 10.2, 9.6, 8.1, 7.5, 7.0, 6.2, 4.9, 2.8

Jiri Bubla_______: 13.2, 8.4, 5.7, 3.6, 3.6, 2.3, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0

Oldrich Machac__: 6.1, 5.6, 4.6, 2.6, 1.6, 1.6, 1.3, 1.2
- both Suchy and Pospisil look to have had a single peak season cut off from the above. Piecing information together from these two sources, we find that Pospisil scored 42 points (in some combination) in 1967-68, and Suchy put up a line of 7-20-27. Given that Pospisil beat Suchy 14.5% to 13.9% in Golden Stick voting in 1970-71 when they had virtually the same scoring totals, respectively (Pospisil again 42 points, and Suchy 29), we can probably assume that Pospisil was at least somewhat better than Suchy in this season, and that they were both at their peaks. Suchy was an all-star at the World Championships in 1968, and it is generally considered the beginning of his peak, at any rate.

Looking over their careers, if you conservatively fudge voting numbers for 1967-68 (fudged numbers marked), you come up with something like this:

Jan Suchy 17.9 15.7 13.9 12.5 2.1 1.4 0.6, 0.05
Frantisek Pospisil 15.8 14.5 13 10.2 9.6 8.1 7.5 7.0 6.2 4.9 2.8

- an interesting comparison. Suchy has a clear advantage in peak value, but falls off a cliff after his 4th best season (at the age of 26 - interestingly the same age that saw the end of Bobby Orr's peak) while Pospisil continues to be a great defenseman until the age of 34.

- also of interest here is that Suchy and Pospisil are often considered to be of somewhat different generations because Suchy's peak comes first and then Pospisil continues on to be a star into the late-70's, but Pospisil was actually born a few months before Suchy.

- the question of why Suchy's voting totals fall off so fast seems relatively clear from the data. First, his offensive explosion was already tailing off before the car crash. Suchy's 29 points in the 1970-71 season are way off of his previous pace, and Pospisil had already passed him in the voting. It seems that Suchy's offensive production simply slipped, and with it his value in the eyes of the voters. He still got votes in 1971-72 after the crash, but not nearly as many, which is perhaps not surprising for an offensive defenseman whose offensive output fell by about one third, from 29 to 20 points.

- I don't think there was a conspiracy against Suchy among the apparatchiks. We see Suchy get votes here and there throughout the rest of his career (somewhat inexplicably even a few in the season when I think he was in prison), pretty much in line with his offensive production. He and Pospisil are actually quite close in 1973-74 (in what was a bad year for Pospisil) when Suchy scores 23 points, and Suchy gets a handful of votes again in 1976-77, coinciding with a spike in his offense back up to the 20 point mark.

------------------------------------------------------------------

- Bubla and Machac really do appear to be very far behind the top guys. Bubla's got two strong seasons, but nothing else as good as Pospisil's 9th best season, and Machac doesn't really have any peak value, though he seems like he was at least relevant and considered a "good player" for a few seasons, and got more votes than his partner Pospisil in the latter's down 1973-74 season.

- overall, I can't help but think that Frantisek Pospisil is the greatest Czech defenseman of this generation. Unless you just don't care about anything beyond the players' respective 4th best seasons, I think his huge advantage in sustained peak (and outright longevity) easily makes up the difference in high peak between he and Suchy in terms of domestic performance. In international competition, Suchy's got Pospisil beat by one WC all-star appearance, but Pospisil was the captain of three WEC-A gold medal winners and based on the voting of the people who watched those matches (where Pospisil was twice Best Defenseman and once an all-star in the three years the Czechs won gold), he must have been hugely important to the success of the national team. Suchy was the best player when the Czechs took down the Big Red Machine in 1969, but I still think Pospisil comes out ahead on international ice, on the whole.

As far as I know he was back on the ice in January 1973, so he didn't receive votes in a season he didn't play at all.

So he only missed the first half of the 1972-73 season, then? I had thought he missed the whole season.

Do you know if Suchy suffered an injury in the car crash that was bad enough to become chronic, or if his play declined for other reasons?

Season ran from early October to early March (plus play-offs in April-May, after the World Championship) so we'd be talking 2/3 of the season missed. Then again, I don't know the exact date when Suchý made his comeback.

Never read anything about bad injuries. I think they would have been mentioned if there were any. Also, Suchý kept playing after the crash until his conviction in February 1972. But his girlfriend died in the car crash, he was responsible for that, it's speculative but not unrealistic to assume he carried mental injuries with him. Throw in his already existing issue with alcohol.
