Maybe Rivet?

He was a healthy scratch for the Habs tonight. He's a UFA. He's not "the answer" and isn't a known puck mover, but if Staios is out for any length of time Rivet would be an ideal fill-in. He's earning a little less than 2.5M this season.

Could he be had for Winchester (remember that Garth Murray was waived) and a draft pick (3rd or Anaheim's 2nd)? Interesting.

Clearly the Oilers need to add some toughness and hopefully they can address that.

I would give a 5th round pick for nothing higher

I would definitely look to get Rivet. From all the Habs games i've watched, which i'll admit isn't that many, he has looked good out there. He has a pretty decent shot from the point, and could buy Kevin Lowe some time until trade deadline time.

I would think Rivet wasn't a healthy scratch at all and the habs are hiding an injury or he's on personal leave.

Yes he's an UFA but he is also a leader for the habs and a part of their core, and being french canadian plays a part of this too.

Also I think Montreal has enough forward depth to spare especially for 3rd/4th liners since Murray was one and recently put on waivers.

I would welcome Rivet with open arms but i really doubt Montreal will trade Rivet with a team contending for the cup.

Rivet doesn't speak French.

But yes, the rest of your point is very valid. The fact that he was benched last night, and he took it badly, was quite surprising. Rivet is one of those guys on our team who you can look to for some leadership when the chips are down. I remember numerous times during the Jose Theodore era, when Theodore would get run, and it was Rivet who would stand up for him. He is very tight with Saku Koivu, and before this bust-up, a lot of people were mentioning how Saku would have a lot of pull in Rivet's contract negotiations. I'm not sure whether any of that changes with this situation. But if I had it my way, I would not trade Rivet at the moment. He is a core guy, and will be a crucial piece for us in the playoffs.

If a deal like this were to happen, I'm not sure whether we would want Winchester back. We have an abundance of forwards, and our true need is a second line centre to really take the load off Koivu. The fact that we had to waive Murray shows you the type of forward depth we have, especially on the bottom two lines. I certainly think guys like Lapierre (who has been somewhat of a revelation), Downey and Begin (when he gets back from injury) are capable of filling those duties.

I would send Roy and a mid-level pick for him.

He's not a #1 or 2, but he would be a solid, physical and gritty top-4 guy.

And here's the issue...

Everyone wants Lowe to make a move yesterday, but not to give up anything.

Even in the trades last year, Lowe gave up more than a 5th round pick to get the guys he got.

A hell no to Rivet. How many can actually claim they've seen him play? I don't. But what I have seen and heard about him he's not the type of player we need and the financial gamble doesn't pan out.

I live in Montreal and have wanted Rivet on the Oilers for a few years now. He's like a harder-hitting Staios without the defensive brainfarts, or a slightly less hard-hitting Jason Smith with a better point shot. He can even man a PP point effectively on the 2nd group.
Very good on positioning and own-zone coverage, though I can't say his breakout pass is particularly outstanding.
