The 24/7 show has really shown why Phaneuf should not be the captain. It just isn't a role that he is suited for. At this point it's not easy to take that away from him. He's fine as the Leafs top defence men but not really suited to be the spokesman in a big market like Toronto.

What has 24/7 shown to prove Phaneuf shouldn't be the captain?

It would take a hell of an argument or a fool that you're arguing with.

I don't think Phaneuf is a 7 mil a year player. Maybe 5.5

How in the world do you get a top 20 d-man in his prime for $5.5 a year? That's so far off reality.

Salary is a better comparison. Unlike the pathetic minimum wage system and collective bargaining system which has been producing a highly unproductive workforce in the developed world, athletes tend to have leverage. Dion meets his expectation and carries our defence. He's going to get the $7 million, he deserves.

Then you need a reality check. The new CBA means much higher cap hits.

I know you're kidding but that's still really silly.

Do the Leafs ever learn from bad contracts? Like seriously. 7m/yr for Phaneuf...wow. I mean, with what they're paying Clarkson, it's to be expected that the team is going to throw out a bad contract again, I just didn't think it'd be a rumor that soon.

Wisniewski's contract looks so good right now.

And yeah, new CBA, blah blah blah...giving Phaneuf 7m for 7yrs is still bad. He is terribly overrated.

Is that exactly how the laws work?

Datsyuk 7.5m
JYBO 5.4
Edler 5m
Seidenburg 4m
Bergeron 6.5m
H Sedin 7m
D Sedin 7m

Just a quick glance at some newly inked higher end players. Frankly I look at those names and the numbers beside them and Dion 7m, just does not seem to mesh with that list.

Leaf fans collectively pray for at the very worst a limited no trade clause.

Delusional Leaf fans that don't understand what he does on a daily basis will. IMO Phaneuf is a #1 d-man but on a Leafs cup contending team, he would ideally be the second best defensemen. That does not mean the Leafs go out and get another #1 d-man however because they have 2 defensemen that have that potential in Rielly and Gardiner. Not that I am comparing the talent level in the players I am about to mention but since the Leafs have drafted Rielly, I have always thought that him and Phaneuf can be similar to the Keith-Seabrook pairing the Hawks have or if you really want to stretch you're imagination... The Niedermayer-Stevens pairing the Devils had in the past if Rielly reaches his enormous potential...

Even if Rielly did have "enormous potential" to magically become a Hall of Fame generational defensive talent like Scott Niedermayer, how, exactly, does he also have the ability to make Dion Phaneuf turn into Scott Stevens or Duncan Keith?

I was not comparing Phaneuf to Keith, I was comparing him to Seabrook which by all means is fair. I said if Rielly develops into a Keith like player, Phaneuf is similar to Seabrook and that would be a possible cup contending pairing. My bad if my original comment was clear about that. Again...I am comparing Rielly to Keith and Phaneuf to Seabrook.
