Apparently the reason Ryan was left off is because he was pushed out of the top 6, and the USA Brass felt other players were better equipped to play a bottom 6 role.

Like others have said, don't like Orpik over JJ, EJ, and Yandle, and I also would have gone with the hot goalie in Bishop over Howard.

Last year, yes. He's been injured for at least a month this year though. I think it's a pretty big risk to put him on the team.

I'd say Martin deserves it. Don't really have an issue with him. Orpik tho...

Obviously you have to build a team and not just pick the players with the best stats, but couple of those decisions just make no sense to me.

No Byfuglien, because who needs an elite offensive defenseman when you can have Orpik, a notably great skater for the #bigice

No Bobby Ryan because Ryan Callahan has more #grit ?

I'm reading Scott Burnside (who got consistent access to meetings) - Orpik was a "lock", one of four D identified as such. That's so...odd.

I don't see the purpose in taking both Martin and Orpik. They're not really the same player, but they're both solid, unspectacular. I can see taking one since the blue line is so young otherwise, but both?

His intangibles are so stealthy. They're even more intangible, they're like...non-tangible.

Reading that article, it sounds like Burke was pushing for all the wrong decisions.

Holmgren suggests the coaches have to decide if Ryan is going to be an integral part of the power-play groups, and if so, he needs to be pushed ahead. But if not, maybe they should be looking at two more well-rounded players.

"I agree," Poile says.

Burke points out that Poile has included the coaches more than he did when he occupied the GM position in Vancouver four years before. It's good, but, he adds, "I think coaches see snapshots, and I think GMs watch the whole movie."

"I think we have to know what we're taking with Bobby," says Burke, who had him in Anaheim when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

"He's a passive guy," Burke says. And over 82 games, yes, Saad and or Pacioretty might be more attractive than Ryan. But Ryan's a game-breaker.

"He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary," Burke says. "It's never going to be in his vocabulary. He can't spell intense."

If he's not going to be put in a role in which he can score an important goal, use his skills as a sniper, he shouldn't go, Burke says.
Wow. Really candid stuff in that article

Variations from my most recently created team:

Stepan, Wheeler included rather than Ryan, Saad

Shattenkirk, Orpik (WTF?) over Yandle, EJ

Howard over Schneider.

My thoughts were that three of Shattenkirk, Faulk, Fowler, and Carlson would make it, and that EJ and Yandle were basically locks. But then Orpik...uh....played his way onto the team?!?, and they took all four of the aforementioned defensemen.

Suter- Faulk
McDonagh- Carlson

Wow.

How much before JR locks Faulk with stupid contract that pay him at least 4.7 at year for next 5-6 seasons...?

I'm feeling better about the Ryan decision. Kane, Kessel and Parise are all MUCH better than him.

Since you would truly have to be braindead to include Ryan in a bottom-6 role, he's basically competing with JVR, Wheeler and others for that final top 6 winger spot.

Even then, the prime opportunities are still going to go to the aforementioned three.

Not a big deal. USA has insane winger depth anyway.

Are you ****ing serious.

Ryan SHOULD have had that last top six wing spot. He's MILES and MILES better than JVR, MaxPac, Wheeler, or even Dustin Brown who's having a ****tastic season. The fact that Ryan was in a "competition" with those names is ********.

There are four top six wing spots. Kessel, Kane, and Parise were locks. Bobby should have been one too. Ryan can play LW. He did so in Anaheim on the RPG line.

What a great article. Interesting differences between picking an allstar team, and trying to win hockey games.

The constant on that roster is how hard they are going to be to play against. You aren't going to out skill Canada. This, to me, seems like the right strategy to compete.

I had never really seen Ryan play much before this year. Obviously I've seen a lot of him this year for Ottawa. There's not a lot of guys in the league that can do the things with the puck that he can. Burke made some strong comments about his intensity; I've yet to see the passivity of which Burke speaks. Of course, he only saw Ryan when he was in Anaheim. How long has he been gone from there? Four years?

The fact Poile had Seth Jones as a lock is embarrassing and speaks to an arrogance that I can't even comprehend. It's all well and good to root for "your guy" - but for **** sakes, man, take off the rose colored glasses.

Don't know if it was official, but the jersey the kid had on was either #72 or #77.

Conversely, as someone who's cheering for Team Canada, I look at the US roster and am kind of unimpressed. Lots of grinding, but again not a lot of pure skill outside of Kane and Kessel. I'd be more uncomfortable playing against Ryan than pretty much the rest of the forward roster.
