Any Interest in C. Gratton

I came across this rumour that the Panthers might be shopping him. http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/fla070118.html

I'm thinking if the Habs could pick him up as a playoff rental to address our second line centre needs and size. It might work if his contract expires at the end of the season (I have no clue).

I'd do it for a fourth round pick. Perhaps I'm underestimating / overestimating his value.

Your thoughts?

I don't care too much for Gratton. You might get that brief Chad Kilger-like burst from him if he comes over in the right mood or gets on the right wavelength to start off with, but sooner or later he'll just lapse back to what he is... a decent 3rd/4th liner who you always know has some of the tools needed to play better than he does, but never quite follows through.

He's signed for $1.5M next year too I see, and frankly, I don't think we need more lukewarm bodies on the lower lines, particularly not at that price. I wouldn't take him. I think our internal candidates are far better candidates for the 2nd line centre role. A team which needs a big grinding guy on the lower lines might want to look into him, but I think Bonk and Lapierre gives us the right guys there already.

If he's signed for next year at $1.5 - then I say we pass. I'd rather keep the cap space and play the rookies. If he wasn't signed he'd be worth considering.

he is signed for 1.5 next yr, so forget it, i dont think he can bring what we need anyways
http://www3.telus.net/public/dreyes/nhl/

i think we could make a deal with florida hopefully.
untill nieuwendyk retired i really hoped he would be our guy.

at this point i dream of getting Horton, but in reality i would target Van Ryn, i think he would be a good addition, and although his salary jumps from 1.7 to 3.2 for next season, i think it would be worth it. also he is apparently being shopped

Florida actually has many players which they could trade at the deadline if they decide to give up on the playoffs:

Gratton
Stumpel
Gelinas
Bertuzzi
Roberts
Belfor

Im not saying that we should go after these guys, but im saying that florida will have many opportunities to unload veteran players to help build their team, which is good for them...

But in that list, I would be interested in Stumpel and Gelinas, who are both UFA and both affordable salaries. they can bring some veteran experience and help to contribute to the habs drive. As I said before Van Ryn could make a good contribution on our top 4 D I think and leave us a legitamite D locked up for next season if we loose souray.

So my proposal
Stumpel+Gelinas+Van Ryn
Vs
Abby+Perz+2nd+ Cote/ or Bouillon

Gives:
Higgins Koivu Ryder
Latendresse Stumpel Kovalev
Samsanov Plekanec Johnson
Gelinas Bonk Striet

Dandy Rivet
Van Ryn Souray
markov Komi

spares/swap on 4th
Lapiere
Begin
With Danis as backup G

I'd prefer Gelinas or Roberts... in that order.

Adding long term contract with Van Ryn would mean there is much less cap room to sign Souray before the June 1st, even if we wanted to. Even the I would picture him as replacement for Rivet, not Souray.

Looking from Panthers angle, they should have no interest on Aebischer, who they could get next summer anyway. And Van Ryn is still solid top 3-4 defenceman for them, Cote or Bouillon wont come near replacing him.
