For those freaking out about Lundqvist's Sv%, it isn't like this hasn't happened before:

Are people really complaining about the devils series. Look at the only 2 games we won. 2 shutouts. Hank is the only reason we didn't get swept in that series. Does anyone thinks the team actually played well in that series?

Does anyone think the team actually played well in that playoff? Talk about stumbling your way to the ECF, Lundqvist carried that team.

This is a rolling average, he had a sub .910 Sv% for his last 10 games of the reg. season.

Each data point represents his average for the past 10 games at that point so the graph goes: game 1-10, game 2-11, game 3-12, etc..

The graph is kind of interesting as it gives previous seasons some context.

In 2011-12 he was amazing for 2/3 of the season but fell off completely in the last 1/3, luckily he got back into his groove in the playoffs.

2012-13 was by far his most consistent season, never dropped below .91 in any 10-game stretch.

He had some really rough stretches 06-09.

Oh, sorry. Great chart, btw. Some people around here will pretend it doesn't exist.

I think 07-08 was the year that was really turbulent for Hank. .912 sv% wasn't incredibly low but it was his lowest and would stand out even more now with his recent move to a more .925 and up run of form.

Other thing was that he has 10 shutouts that year, so when he wasn't shutting teams out he was playing rather poorly.

Technically if he has a good second half, this doesn't have to be his worst season. He could still end up at 2.40 and .915 or so with 30 wins.

Aside from what I thought were 2 lousy goals on Friday night, he did get it done. However, he looked awfully shaky. Assuming he is in tonight, it could be an adventure.

What if he looks not shaky according to your arbitrary analysis, and loses?

Depends. Did they lose 2-1, 1-0? Was he left out to dry all game and did what he could to keep them in it? Did he give up his famous Mister Softee Special?

Hank is slowly and surely playing back up to his standard. He was exceptional tonight.

Blue Blooded: Great post, that is an awesome chart. On another note, I know how tedious and time consuming it is to create something like that.

And people are getting on his ass cuz for once he looks human and isn't carrying the freakin team on his back? Way to stand behind the team and support a player who has been an absolute bedrock, playing with more consistency over his career than any goalie in this league and quite likely the best goalie this team has ever seen.
But what has he done for us lately? Like 10 minutes ago, what did he do then?

As everybody can see, Lundqvist is not "falling off the train". He's within the normal statistical deviations that any human who want to perform will experience. If anyone has played poker, you have seen this exact same graphs on your own poker winnings. If you have played chess, you have seen this rating chart on your own performance. It's the law of averages.

He has faced adversity countless times before and bounced back and then some. But sure, worry about the only guy on the team you shouldn't need to worry about. Worry about the guys who are playing themselves off the team instead.

Nah my Excel-skills are off the chart by this point, that was nothing!

But yeah while Hank's stretch from game ~18-31 was dreadful, it was still nothing outside of the norm. Goaltending is notoriously volatile. Hank was just so consistent last season we sort of forgot that it is like that sometimes.

It's the Lundqvist syndrome. He's so good it becomes impossible for himself to uphold his own standard. At least to the standard everybody expects from him, all the time. Especially when he has to also deal with the more than equally volatile team in front of him.

The 30 wins really doesn't impress me. Especially since he played 70 games in some of those seasons and unlike guys like Roy, Hasek, Belfour, Richter, CuJo, etc, he had the benefit of the shootout to pad those win totals. Secondly, the way he is playing now, he may never get to that 450-win total you are talking about.

I do think it is cute that he wins 3 games in a row, 2 shaky and last night he was very good, and the Lundqvist apologists come back out of the woodwork.

I think it's "cute" that you think that .946 and .923 save % performances are "shaky".

(Hasek's career is .922)
