I wouldn't count out Gostisbehere yet either. If he comes in at the end of the AHL season and hopefully for the playoffs and tears it up like Read did, he will have a chance too. Union is a pretty good team though and could make the frozen four, killing any chance he would have for the regular season but if the Phantoms make the playoffs, he could get some time.

The Flyers could sign two $4m player as free agents because you can be over the cap during the summer, but they wouldn't be able to fit them under the cap to start the season without trading someone.

FORWARDS
Jaromir Jagr ($4.000m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Vincent Lecavalier ($4.500m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Brayden Schenn ($2.900m) / Sean Couturier ($1.750m) / Matt Read ($3.625m)
Michael Raffl ($1.000m) / Scott Laughton ($0.894m) / Jay Rosehill ($0.675m)
DEFENSEMEN
Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / Nikita Nikitin ($4.000m)
Mark Streit ($5.250m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Erik Gustafsson ($1.100m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Chris Pronger ($4.941m) /
GOALTENDERS
Steve Mason ($4.000m)
Cal Heeter ($0.874m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $72,359,720; BONUSES: $212,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): -$1,259,720

Grossmann or LSchenn seem the most likely to be traded to me since Hartnell has the NMC. If they think Alt can be a #6 they would get almost an extra $3m in cap space to play with. Coburn is too important to trade unless they are getting a 27 minute #1 guy to take his minutes, and they aren't.

He is one of the players I am most excited about. I really think he has some potential, and the Flyers seem to think that as well. Sooner or later we are going to have to get younger(Cheaper) players on the back end. If they develop the right way, we can finally strike gold not only with one prospect, but a few. Ghost I have a feeling could become something special, just going to keep expectations down for now though.

Also I think Gus might be traded or even let go of. A team in need of a young defender might take a flyer on him, and I wouldn't really be opposed to it. I just feel he has no spot in this lineup, and that 1.1 million could be used effectively somewhere else.

I think they will sign Gus for another year to be a cheap #5. Ghost needs a season in the AHL

I would still trade Hartnell if that is possible. Do not like how that contract might look in a few years at all. I would also look into getting better 4th line players to supplant Rinaldo and Rosehill.

I really like Hartnell but I agree that if we can get something significant for him and he is willing to waive his NMC, I would do it. Same goes for Vinny and Streit. That being said, I don't foresee Hartnell, or any of them for that matter, being traded.

We don't. He will come here in a couple years on his own.

With Ottawa's money issues we should just wait till 2015 and hopefully sign him as a FA.

I'd be willing to part with the 2 Schenn's and one of Striet/Mez in a package for a winger in the top 9 or big right handed D - Buff?

Coburn-Buff
Grossmann - Gus
Mez/Stiet - Alt

Can be moved up/down

As someone who looks at financials-- I hate losing assets.

Players I wouldn't like to lose without upgrades:

Downie, Schenn, McGinn, Hall, VandeVelde
Timonen, Meszaros (1.5-2m prove yourself contract and lack of D depth), Gus
Emery (on the fence-- only because he can start elsewhere I doubt he stays)

Players okay to lose:
Gill, Bourdon, Gervais

Ignoring AHLers for this.

I doubt Emery gets a starting job anywhere after this season. Carolina got a better backup goalie for less than half his cap hit.

Who do you keep and who do you possibly trade? This team needs to figure out if we are contenders or not. We have players that teams probably covet to make a push into the playoffs. We also have a nice group of young talented forwards to continue to build around.

The team needs to know where they stand going into the Olympic Break, and who they could target or possibly trade.

Players you keep:

Giroux
Voracek
Couts
Schenn
Read
Simmer

Players who could be had if we are out of contention:

Kimmo Timonen(I would expect a very nice return for him)
Hartnell-hard to judge
Vinny-If he would be open to a trade, St Louis would love to have him probably
Mez-just leave
Streit-isn't going anywhere, but I would try to move him

The players I left out are players like Coburn, Grossmann, Hall, VV, who are players we should probably keep or players who will return nothing in trades.

It will be interesting to watch the next few weeks to see where this team stands.

The flyers need NHL or close to NHL ready young mobile defensemen with decent puck skills. You are not going to get them without moving someone off of the players to keep category. Out of the group B. Schenn would be the one I would move with Lecavalier on the roster now and Laughton in the wings.

IMO the flyers need 3 things to be a true Stanley Cup contender if Mason turned out to be the real deal. They need 2 mobile defensemen with decent to great puck skills. They don't both have to be big point producers but have to make a good outlet pass and not be a disaster in their own zone. I think they could get one in UFA but not both. The 3rd thing is a top line left wing. Raffl is a nice support player but is not a top line forward.

I would rebuild the 4th line from scratch, and otherwise not trade anyone away. Let every one of our UFAs walk, and then try to replace Kimmo by committee as best you can in UFA.

Let this core play together a few years.

The obvious candidates to ship out though are Streit and Hartnell, and you can't, so it's moot. The cap should go up though, right, right?

I like the idea of a Raffl-Laughton-somebody who can play hockey and is physical for the fourth line. Need to be able to bring energy and actually be able to contribute something to the game. Our 4th line is horrible right now.

I wouldn't mind Hall there actually.

Raffl-Laughton-Hall

Not too bad I don't think.

Also, Murray from Ottawa said they will be looking for a power forward and are willing to move youth to get one. Scott Hartnell to Ottawa?? A lot of people don't think he would get a nice return around here or even be able to be traded. I think teams covet players like him, and with the cap going up big time, that contract will almost be a non factor. He is also making the most this year in the extension. 5 million for the next three and 4.5, and 3 there on. It would look good for a cheap owner like whatever his name is.

That's a lot to give up for one player. I know it won't happen anyway but if it actually happened, Weber better be the last missing piece to put them over the edge...

In fact, a similar blockbuster trade is not even that unlikely to happen next offseason with the departure of Timonen and ongoing issues on defense. Might just turn out to be another stud player not named Shea Weber and the center to be moved could as well be Couts instead of Schenn if nothing else pans out and Homer believes that Laughton can be the defensive 3rd line center of the future...

I would like to trade Vinny and one of Downie/Hartnell. I honestly think we could get first round picks for those players from teams who need depth for a playoff run. I trade all three if possible, but I honestly don't see Hartnell getting traded. So if we could trade Vinny and Downie for a 1st each. Resign Schenn for 2.9 mil, Mason for 4, Raffl for 1.2 , Gus for 1.25 and a backup for 1 million or less we could have

XXX-Giroux-Voracek
Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds
Raffl-Couturier-Read
McGinn-Laughton-Hall
Rinaldo

XXX-Coburn
Grossmann-Streit
Gus-Schenn

Mason
Backup

We would have around 14 million to spend on 1st line LW and a 1st pairing defenseman. We could use those first round picks to trade for a top winger like Kane (though im not that interested in him), Ryan or someone else. Or we could resign Timonen for 1 more year and sign a guy like Vanek and save those first to stock our prospect pool

If I'm in charge of this team, I'm doing whatever is necessary to get Ekblad at the draft, and I go from there. Only assets I wouldn't trade to make that a reality are Giroux & Mason.

Outside of Ghost, Morin, Hagg and Laughton, prospect is very underwhelming. But I agree that these four should be untouchable maybe expect for Laughton.

I do believe it is worth it too sell some roster players and picks for Ekblad though.
