Montoya - Hot, Hot, Hot

Montoya seems to be just toying with teams in the AHL these days, hes been on fire for more then a month. If he keeps it up the Sather is going to have to make a decidion what to do with him this summer, is he going to try to trade him while he his stock is pretty high, or is he going to have him backup Lundqvist next season? (Weekes is a UFA correct?).

Montoya's stats in the past 10 games:

Record: 9-0-1
Save %: .936
GAA: 1.66
Shutouts: 2

(I know I'm jumping the gun, but I wanted to reignite this discussion and see what other people felt)

BTW these are Valiquette's #s in his past 10 games just if anyone was wondering:

Record: 5-5-0
Save %: .887
GAA: 2.21
Shutouts: 0

Unfortunately his stock won't be very high until he plays a considerable number of games in the NHL which seems unlikely with Renney at the helm....

Montoya is one of my favorite players, but he's still wildly inconsistant, add that to the new UFA rules and his cap hit, I'm not entertaining the idea of him backing up Lundqvist next year. his play is encouraging, but I don't think it really calls for a change of plans of any sorts.

and yes, Weekes is a free agent.

He'll be with the Rangers next year as the backup. Don't count on this year. Weekes won't be back after this season. You don't spend that high of a #1 pick on a player and not use him. He may surpass The King at some point too.

Great to see him playing well. It might not be a bad idea to have him backup Lundqvist next year, to let him get some NHL experience under his belt...assuming they think he's ready. The problem is how much action would he really see? I doubt he would get more than 20-25 games, and that might not be enough.

Pack fans don't always seem to like him

He definitely needs to get his consistancy down, but I also think you can't just hold him down in the AHL forever. If he finishes the season strong, has a good playoff run, and a good camp next September, he should definitely get the backup job in NY.

How is Montoya supposed to play when he has weeks and lundy ahead of him.... Renney is only the coach he can't trade weeks. You can't blame montoya not playing in the NHL on Tom Renney......

Next year Monty should be up with the Rangers and I would not mind a Toskala/Nabokov situation for a year or two. Then you can decide what you wanna do after that.

Well Montoya was never in this teams plans for this current season. Weekes will be a UFA at seasons end and I highly doubt he would resign with the Rangers, but with another NHL team where he might have a chance to start or battle for a starting job. Montoya should be backing up Lundqvist next season.

He's improved, I'll definitely give him that. However, there are a lot of things in his game that still need to be adressed.

For example, in tonight's game he skated out to the corner to play the puck, fell down, and almost had the puck go into the net while he was down and out of the play. Luckily, it stopped in the crease and Marvin Degon cleared it out.

Personally, I think Valiquette would be better suited as the backup in New York next season, with Montoya getting an extra season of development in Hartford to work out any kinks he might still have in his system. At the moment, yeah Valiquette hasn't been terrific in his last few games. However, he's still a good goaltender.

I definetly believe that Monty should stay another year in Hartford and play 70+ games. Look what happened with Ryan Miller with all of that seasoning.

If they commit to giving him 70 games, through the good and bad streches, then i'll easily agree to leave him in HFD. But will that happen? Who knows, this year they have been going 50/50 but seem to give the edge to Valliquette.

I would like to see that as well, I think it would work out well as long as Montoya can perform.

with the UFA rules, I don't want to activate the NHL contract, does anyone know how many games a goalie can play as opposed to a skater?

i like what he brings. give him 20-30 games next season to help him ease in. If he's hot (like one of those rookie going-for-3-consecutive-shut-out streaks), ride him, let Henke get rest. I know how much Henke wants to play to the point of hurting himself so getting him some rest will do him good. And let's not forget, there should be a decent amount of cap space cleared up with the departure of mister www.kevinweekes.com

If the Rangers are competitive next season.... As most of us expect them to be.... There's no way that Tomboy is going to skate a rookie goaltender for many games if any....

Everyone knows him... He seems to favor veterans at all costs....

If the rookie goaltender is the best option, then why not.

Ah, but you're right. This is the Rangers. No youth allowed.

Balej...

I'm only predicting that based on Renney's track record alone...

Last season, he favored Weekes for a long time before he would concede that Lundqvist should be #1....

He favored Rucinsky while he was healthy over Prucha even when Prucha was red hot...

This season he favored the veteran inept defenseman (Malik, Kaspar, Rachunek, Ozolinsh) when they're healthy over Pock despite Pock playing fairly solid....

Prucha gets demoted for lack of production while Cullen gets left alone....

Etc. Etc....

To me all signs point to Renney relying on a veteran goaltender to back up Lundqvist next season... Will that be Weekes? I don't know....

Perhaps Valiquette....

Memories are a little short.

Let's remember that a rookie named Henrik Lundqvist took the starting job from a veteran named Kevin Weekes last year.

I'm sure someone already pointed this out....
