Everyone is comparing Cogliano to Marchant but with better offensive upside. Has anyone actually seen Marchants college stats? LOOK HERE. Marchant put up slightly better numbers at the college level than Cogs has so far. They both have very similar skill sets with Cogs being a bit more of a goal scorer, i think it just boils down to how their games are translated to the NHL level. Marchant was great at every level except the NHL, so hopefully Cogs can go one step further and bring his offence to Edmonton.

Keep in mind Marchant put up those numbers back in 1991 and 1992. I have no idea what scoring has been like in the NCAA but it could very well have been different back then.

To me, you have to look at fairly recent comparables from college like Mike Comrie, Mike Cammalleri and Paul Stastny. I remember making a thread on this last year but he's pretty close to those three in terms of points-per-game so I'm fairly happy.

I'm not surprised at all by Marchant's college stats. He's another example of a high skilled guy in college or junior who puts up nice stats but needed to adapt his game to play at the game's highest level.

In the NHL, Marchant lacked the finishing ability to be a top player. But with his elite skating and hard work, Marchant has carved out an invaluable team role as a tenacious checker who can also chip in valuable points.

Cogs has a very similar toolbox, imo. Marchant is stronger defensively but Cogliano's solid hockey sense could be slightly better. If we get the second coming of Todd Marchant I'll view this a successful pick. But if we get a guy that can play solid d and contribute top two line offense, then Cogs will be a stellar pick.

Transitioning from junior/college is the toughest leap of all. We'll need to see how much upside there is in young Cogliano. But Todd Marchant is a very favourable comp in my estimation.

here are some stats i did for players sophmore seasons in the NCAA (I added cammalleri)

parise 1.49 PPG
comrie 1.48
heatley 1.46
cammalleri 1.45
marchant 1.39
cogliano 1.36
vanek 1.34
reasoner 1.26
kolanos 1.22
kobesew 1.14
pisani 0.94
stafford 0.88
horcoff 0.8

as you can see, he is right where he should be in terms of production (although i believe that cammalleri might have been a year younger than cogs for his sophmore season).... he might end up being a vanek or parise, or he might end up being a kolanos or reasoner.... time will tell as it always does
