We have had 10 skaters our first 9 games, now we have 11. Best Rotation?

We have had 10 skaters our first 9 games, now we have 11. Best Rotation?

Hey all. Quick question, we are 9 games into our season and have had 10 skaters every game. Its obviously worked out well with that number because we have 6 forwards and 4 defenseman.

None of us have played together before(for the most part), so we took a couple games to let guys play different positions, see who liked to play where, who was good where, and see who worked well together.

The last few games have been great, good shifts, quick changes, everyone knew where to be, and when to change, and we were playing really well.

Last night an 11th guy joined. Which is fine. However, it just messed everyone up.
Nobody really knew how to properly cycle in the odd man.

The first period, we cycled 5 defenseman. Second and third period, one forward would just sit two consecutive shifts each time through(although this kind of threw off the positions that many people were getting used to).

Whats the ideal way to cycle 11 guys on a team? Is there a best way?

Its not my call, but I was thinking of possibly suggesting 4 regular defenseman, 4 regular wings, and having 3 centers each swap out. Center being the position(in my mind) that the most is expected of. Thus, keeping them the most fresh.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Options....

1) 6 Fs and 5 D.
2) 7 Fs and 4 D. Two full lines and a rotator, usually someone that will volunteer to play all forward postions. He goes LW, C, RW for one line, then to the other, and back, etc.

I play on a few teams and most do something along the lines of the above. It sucks when people don't get to sit when they need to, but what can you do...

One of my teams is comprised of people who can play any position well, so whenever we're in a bind w/few players for the night we just roll "whatever/whenever". First guy who is on the bench goes for whomever comes to sit first.

Also what can work well:

7 F, 4 D

4 Wingers (2 lines), 3 Centers and have the centers haul ass like crazy.

10 = 6F 4D
11 = 7F 4D
12 = 8F 4D
13 = 9F 4D
14 = 9F 5D
15 = 9F 6D (full roster)

9 = 5F 4D (forwards playing pickup style)
8 = 5F 3D (forwards and D playing pickup style)

Pickup style = guys call position as they come off the ice, next up on the bench plays that position.

If you guys are good enough where you don't need to play a set position all night, just run the forwards off the end of the bench.

The team I'm on now tends to run a 5th D in that situation, then keeps the option open to switch one D to center if the centers start getting more fatigued.

I suggest using two pair of defensemen and wingers, with 3 centres. The centres have the toughest job, they have to skate the full length of the ice.

Opposition

Choice depends on the opposition you are facing and their manpower situation.

If they are icing fewer players than you concentrate the extra player advantage where it will further tire and weaken them.

Equal then play the score and match to get an advantage or support a weakness.

If they are icing more rotate the players to get the pace that best suits your game.

Yes.

We have this situation and guys on the team seem to think its a good idea to have the rotators playing different forward positions each shift.

Just confuses everything.

Pick a position and have those guys switch off.

I would go with 3 centers as well with one of the centers taking a shift on the wings or even D every now and then.

Roll 3 centers through 2 lines of wingers is a sensible option if you are playing competitively, but it's a bit unfair if you want to split ice time evenly

When I have an odd number like that I like to have the D play with 2 normal lines and then have the offense do a rat.

By far the best way to do it, in my experience. It gives the centers a little more jump in their step, which is necessary since they play a 200-foot game. The wingers and D have simple on-off rotations, no confusion.

I don't care for rotating players to different positions, unless they really feel like doing it voluntarily. In a system like the one above, centers are getting 20 (hard skating) minutes each and everyone else gets 30 -- nobody is getting screwed out of a reasonable amount of time. I don't see the benefit in swapping people around just as they're getting into a rhythm.

Thanks everyone.

I am going to suggest the 3 centers(which is what I originally had in mind) when the topic comes up in the dressing room prior to our next game.

It actually makes the most sense for the team I'm on. We have an older guy, as compared to the rest of us who are in our early to mid 30's(he's probably about 50), he's a good player, a solid center(especially on faceoffs), and a great guy, but he tires more quickly than most anyone on the team.

It would probably make sense on those terms as well.

If you're in a basic adult league that's not super competitive, just rotate 7 F or 5 D.

People's positions get mixed up a bit, but it splits the ice time evenly (which is important since everyone pays equal money to play).

Yeah the centers will be a little shafted on ice time, but it's simple and unless the centers are SUPER fit they can benefit from having 3 because they will be super fresh.

Exactly what I was going to write. Your centers have to come back well into the D zone to cover high or sometimes even low slot, so they have to skate the most. Keep them fresh whenever possible. I'd rotate them most often, and plus that way each winger pairing will get to play with every center, so it keeps things on track.

We just have the centers trading off for each other only and sets of wings (and on PK the center sits).

11 - 4D, 4W, 3C
12 - 4D, 6W, 2C
