I'd be willing to part with a 3rd or maybe a conditional 2nd round pick. Wouldn't give much more than that. Forsberg, even if he would re-sign with us, is still a short term solution. We can't leverage the future for anyone who won't be a part of our long term plans.
Forsbergs injuries will haunt him, plus the way NY has played schizophrenic hockey this season, more pieces of the puzzle are needed to get the team on track.

One piece puts the whole forward puzzle together properly - 2nd line center.
Adding Forsberg (healthy) to this team brings us up to top 5 in the conference, even with our less than average D. Every team in the East (save the Sabres and Sens IMO) have some or many weaknesses.
Tyutin-Ward
Girardi-Pock
Malik-Rozi
Tyutin is our only consistantly solid D-man. Ward, as we all know, is better than what he is currently showing, and I can only hope he steps it up in the playoffs if we make em. Girardi brings some semblance of simplicity to this d-corps that is missing from our supposed #1 -#2 d-men.
If they somehow get it together, this team can win some games. Playoff games.
Maybe so...that just leaves us short about 2 or 3 starting dmen.
Tyutin and Rozsival (when he's not being weighed down by Malik) are the best two D-men we have. Ward should be 3rd pairing at best. Pock actually plays well next to Rozsival, so ideally get a quality D-man to pair with Tyutin, put Pock and Rozsival together, put Malik and Rachunek in deals, and bring up Baranka to play next to Ward.

This defense is not AS BAD as most think. The inconsistant bugs need to be taken out
Rozsival-Pock
Tyutin-Ward
Girardi-VETERAN
That would give the team a SOLID top 6 that can take equal icetime during the game and then when crunch time comes:
Would love to see Forsberg on this team, but say bye-bye to the youth movement, and then we become an allstar team again, which previously hasn't worked.

It's not that black and white. There is always the inevitable gray area.

Renney seems to like Malik... He's never going to get rid of him prior to the playoffs....
Remember how badly Malik & Rozsival get exposed last season in the playoffs? What makes you think that Rozsival and the rest of the defensive core are up for it this year?
I think they're going to get spanked again if we make the playoffs.... They can hardly play consistently during the regular season.....
also, having both Girardi & Pock play in the playoffs? 2 untested AHL defensemen... Unlikely Renney would do this heading into the playoffs.....
ANY team that makes the playoffs and has a hot goalTENDER is a conTENDER
You need a SOLID defense....
Lundqvist will not be able to stand on his head and make 35+ saves a night for the entire duration of the playoffs....
Just look at the type of scoring chances we give up on a regular basis.... No way shape or form this defense is ready to weather the playoff atmosphere.... We've already waived 2 veteran defensemen and have 2 untested AHL defensemen on the roster....
