Fair contract.

That will be 5.77% of the cap next year. Pretty decent for a starter.

Though it is pretty much the same contract Cory Schneider signed in 2012 after 50 games at ~.930.

Mason has 43 at .922.

He will be the ~20th highest paid goalie in the NHL cap hit wise as of next year.

Good deal for both sides. 3 years isn't too long, 4.1 isn't too much.

Fair deal. But as the G contract, no downside in waiting longer to do it.

Makes sense with the cap increase. Hopefully he doesn't buy the farm.

I believe it's a well calculated moment to resign Mason. The last couple of games he somehow lost his swagger just when they are right in the middle of the play-off position war.

It will give him the boost to regain his mental focus. I really look forward for the tough games against the Western upper team now when Mason will be super motivated.
Signing him now doesn't benefit anyone but Mason. If his play since December remains on going trend then he doesn't deserve a raise. The Flyers were better off waiting. He has done nothing to show he has turned his career around.

Why? It's not like the Flyers handcuffed themselves with this deal.

Two great months followed by two sub par months. At this point the two great months are the exception when it comes to his career. There was no reason for the Flyers not to wait and see whether he continues to play like Steve Mason or if he can turn it around again. They had nothing to lose by waiting. It may seem reasonable when you compare it to some of the awful deals out there, but it very well may look terrible if he finishes around his career averages.

I bet the people praising this deal were the same ones praising the Bryzgalov contract.

Yet this is nothing like his contract. 3 years. 4.1M per year. No NMC/NTC. Gives us the perfect time to get Stolarz ready.

I actually think differently.

I'm thinking the negotionations leading to the deal caused the shaky play. I guess we will see tonight.

Yea need to sign schenner but for how much? Little less than simmer would seem to be a good fit

If he plays like he did early, the Flyers probably have to pay him $5.5M/year or walk away.

If he puts up a 0.905 sv% for the rest of the year, the Flyers sign him for $3M/year or walk away.

The Flyers got a happy medium here, and removes summer uncertainty. I'm not fully on the Mason train, but things have been more positive now surrounding the goaltending situation than any time in recent memory. The team wants to win for him and that's not anything I've heard consistently in post-game interviews over the last few years.

My biggest concern with Mason is what's between his ears. I don't trust that he's over whatever caused him to lose confidence in Columbus. However, the talent has never been a question.

Leighton has little NHL talent and I never believed he had the confidence to succeed as a starter (he cried with joy when he was interviewed after the ECF, when the job was far from over).

I never would have signed Leighton, at all.

True, but at the same time, if he finished strong with no contract they'd be paying more than they are now. It works both ways.

Mason started off with a Calder season in Columbus then several seasons of absolute suck. He started off here with a strong 30 games or so then has looked shaky and frankly not starter quality since.

You wait till the off-season to see how he plays the rest of the season to get a larger sample size and know more about how he'll play. It's not that complicated and there's really no reason against waiting until later in the year to sign him.

You realize by praising the deal you're playing "armchair GM" as much anyone else, right? Anyone judging the deal, positively or negatively, is playing armchair GM and there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's supported by solid reasoning.

Myself as well as many others would have gladly paid up another one mil or so potentially (since he doesn't have the track record to demand anything too large so he doesn't have a lot of leverage either way) if it meant more assurance that he's capable of being an actual NHL starter.
