Timonen and perhaps Coburn (don't recall anything too stupid) were the only competent looking Dmen. The rest were awful. Mason was lackluster again. This team badly needs someone who can just shoot the damned puck.
We have a top line of all playmakers and a second line of all finishers. One of these things is useless.
And this is the type of post that makes sense, thank you Beef. Not "OMG this team sucks no effort disgrace disgusting". Calling out specific players and problem and pointing out what is needed, which I agree with. 4 Dmen playing like trash, goalies playing bad, and no players for our playmakers to set up.
We need to start sandbagging like Edmonton and all the other teams that get good picks for years then turn it up . We just don't suck enough so never get a top 2 pick and when we did, he didn't do much till we traded him!
Someone said Mason didn't look "sharp", but wasn't bad and that's pretty accurate in all honesty. The problem is that he hasn't looked "sharp" since probably early December or late November. At least not for any sustained length of time. For a player that was playing so well to start, people were praising so much earlier on, and a guy who is our starting goalie and just received a three year extension we need better then that. Part of being a starting goaltender in the NHL is making big saves and just generally being dependable in net.
The D on this team is definitely worse and a bigger issue in the now, but we haven't had a long-term starter in a very long time and Mason/Emery are most definitely a problem right now.
This wasn't answered in the GDT so I'll post it again:
See, I never played hockey therefor I have no idea what the fundamentals are..
However, don't they teach you to get your BODY in front of the puck when trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone as a defender? Or do they shy away from this since it can cause a defender to get his legs wrapped up while trying to turn?
EDM is doing awful, but Pitt, and Chicago are doing well. The oilers did not have a prospect like McDavid come through when they were drafting. It is all the luck of the draw.
There's nobody on Chicago that's a 100 point or generational player really. There's a couple of relatively high echelon point producers on there, but they're a great team because they're well-rounded and well-built from good management. Guys like Taylor Hall, RNH, Eberle, and potentially Yakupov aren't much worse if any worse then Patrick Kane and Toews. Problem with Edmonton is that's all they have and their management is probably the worst I've ever seen for a franchise. Like, ever. Even with other teams Colorado has managed to make the playoffs in the recent past and they're on the upswing after drafting guys like Mackinnon and Landeskog that aren't any better then the top guys in Edmonton. Yet they're not nearly as bad of a team or franchise.
Ahh people hear the next Crosby & lose it over McDavid. Truth is he's not on the level of Crosby when Crosby was his age.
The draft is still a year & a half, things can change.
Of course. I will be the first too say, that Crosby was superior. But, McDavid is arguably the best prospect since Crosby. McDavid is at a 1.72 ppg pace, and during Crosby's first year he had a 2.28. So, of course Crosby was a superior play when it comes to point production. McDavid is still one hell of a hockey player though.
Simply put...they are getting lazy. They pulled off some wins in games they overall didnt play well and it went to their heads. They have gained a lot of confidence offensively but have become increasingly lazy in the defensive zone. You can almost smell goals coming now, especially on their failed clears.
Maybe not pushing this one to OT will wake them up for tomorrow. If this team gives 60 minutes...they will win most nights. IF is the key word there.
