I don't what to think about that. I guess the criteria sure wasn't taken from the stnadings.

But these two give it their all.

I find it interesting how tsn always does these rankings never showing how they arrived at these lists. Just once I'd like to see the "formula" they use

here's what i'm talking about. NHL.com does a "power ranking" with a link to all the stats used to calculate the list. tsn does all these rankings without ever showing a hint of statistics. For all we know there's some old bald guy in a dark room on a saturday night who takes his favorite players and slaps them down on some paper.

Those are based on numbers and computers.
Kinda like the BCS. Don't trust it.

aside from the irrelevant rankings, does anyone think Staios or Smith will get a looksie when it comes time to pick the D-Men for Canada at the World Cup later this summer?

Here's what I'm thinking.

locks:
1. Blake
2. Pronger
3. Niedermayer
4. Jovanovski
5. Redden

possible candidates in order:
1. Brewer
2. Bouwmeester
3. Foote
4. Souray
5. Sopel
6. Aucoin
7. Staios
8. Smith

am I missing anyone?

I don't think Brewer should be that high on your list. Aucoin, Souray and Staios deserve it much more. I'm discrediting his play, but it's certainly not up to par.

Cale Hulse?

Has Sopel been THAT good this year to deserve #8 in the league?

I hear ya but knowing that KLo will be helping pick Team Canada I'm betting Brewer gets a shot. surrounded by All Stars, Brewer could take his game to the next level and KLo has a vested interest in motivating him. maybe he can learn how to be consistent if he plays with the likes of Pronger and Blake again.

I don't think many of the players from your lock list will play. Usually top end guys don't play, and besides,I'm imagine all those teams will at the least have long 1st rounds, meaning they wouldn't be able to play anyways. Foote and Sopel will most likely not go either. I bet all 3 of Staios, Smith and Brewer get invites, but I'll bet that at least one of them will turn it down for personal reasons(Smith is my guess)

The World Cup is well after the World Championships. I believe it is in August. It's a biggie - I think all of the top end guys will play, barring injury, as it may be the only chance they get to play next year.

Does jovocops play this year warrant an auto-spot on the list?

I peronsally don't think so.

My picks are:

Pronger
Redden
Blake
Souray (outstanding year for this guy, and has the tools to play his game on the bigger ice)
McCabe
Aucoin

Not the flashiest or sexiest group, but these guys are all workhorses for their teams, and all have the skating and puck handling ability to play on the bigger ice. I really think Aucoin and Souray are having good enough years to warrant this... Aucoin always gets overlooked for everything, but the guy is a horse.

I was under the impression that the World Cup will be played on NHL size ice, as they did in '96.
I'll give you Souray but I think Jovo would be a lock ahead of Aucoin or McCabe.

sexiest?

Since the imposed the rule that you must have a certain number of young players on each team.... (not sure, is it three guys under 21???? ) I'd say that Bouwmeester is almost a lock to be there, along with perhaps Spezza, Nash or Fleury as the third goalie (less likely now that he's a Screaming Eagle once again)......

Have you seen the 3 of them play this year?

Jovo has been the worst out of the 3.

I know and I agree with you, but I think the powers that be, will pick Jovo based on reputation.

Let me put this out there: does Belfour instantly become the #1 goalie because he's having a better year than Brodeur or Joseph?

No, because he is going to fall apart in the playoffs again, just like last year. The leafs are riding him way too hard.
