It was patently obvious to some of us he was done way before this thread and all the arguments for signing him were made. Nothing personal against the guy and when he was at his prime he was one of my favorite players but the injuries just took a toll on the guy...with each one he would return and play tentative and it ultimately made him a marginal player. I'm glad for once management had the foresight to not sign a player that was most likely going to spend most of his time in the press box anyway. Now he can do so full time and not risk his health any further...

Gagne wouldn't really contribute too much right now, Flyers need D not another winger.

yeah no kidding. the way he was treated on his way out of town the first time was wrong. But as you say that is a whole other problem/discussion.

Ex-Flyer Gagne would rather be playing

Quote:
Even in yesterday's hedonistic setting, in a country where hockey is religion, something was missing. While Gagne was reliving his Olympic memories on-air in French for all of Quebec to see, he was simultaneously wrestling with the fade of his playing career at the too-young age of 33.

Gagne, who turns 34 on Friday, does not have an NHL contract - but he isn't ready or willing to sign retirement papers just yet.

I know he has a young family, but I'm surprised he didn't sign in Europe

Honestly, there's no room on the team for Gagne. But he's probably my favorite player of all time and I want him on here pretty bad.

He's way too old honestly. Look at Vinny. People think he's a grandpa and are already counting him out as a long term player. Gagne is the same age so we don't want to turn the Flyers into the Phillies by filling the roster with guys in their mid-30's.

As cool as it would be to have him back, I just don't think he'll have enough productivity to be worth it.

Well, I had wondered what he had been up to - so, when I saw the article, I posted the link. Sorta filled in the blanks.

Yeah, he's sure to get a deal there, and if he wanted to play, why not explore that option? Oh, and from the article it kind of seems as though someone who wanted to retire with the Flyers has now grown a bit of resentment towards the organization or at least Holmgren.

The way Gagne's career is ending and the way Holmgren handled him towards the end of it gives me a sad face.

You and me both. What a disgrace. At least he has a gold medal and a Stanley Cup.

I honestly believe he can still help this team. At 1.5 - 2MM a year, the Flyers could do far worse.

Can he really?

My first reaction is to agree, yes he can, even if he's not the offensive player he used to be he can still be a valuable player. But at this point he's probably a bottom-6 guy, maybe a $1M contract makes sense, but if you're Simon Gagne do you love the game enough to play 3rd/4th line for $1M a year? Especially when you've got a concussion history? If I'm Gagne I'm not sure it's worth it to me. And I'm guessing that's why he isn't playing; he doesn't want to risk his health for that kind of money and role, and probably not for that kind of money for maybe a bigger role in some inferior Euro league.

I blame Holmgren for many things, but the fact no team in the league wants Gagne is not his fault.

Gagne was a washed up player with a bad medical history. His comments were nothing but sour grapes. The dude had no offers & was banking on the Flyers to give him deal based off of their history, unfortunately for him the Flyers didn't think he was worth a contract anymore along with the other 29 teams in the league.

There are worse options for a bottom six role than Gagne IMO. He could have been a good defensive LW for the 3rd or 4th line who would have more offensive game than Rinaldo, Rosehill, and maybe even Downie (even though he did look great with Couts and Read when he first got here. Also would have added some much needed speed to the team, is also still really good defensively, good on the pk and a good locker room guy. I would have offered him no more than two years and no more than 1.5 million. I don't know if he would have accepted that, but he seems like he still wants to play even right now. With that said, I can see why some people including Holmgren were/are ready to move on.

I wish so much Gagne was playing in the place of Downie right now.

And if Gagne was playing, you'd be wishing so much Downie was playing in his place.

I'd rather have Gagne in the playoffs on the 4th line than Rinaldo or Rosehill.

i'd rather have Gagne on the wing with Schenn and Simmer, then Vinny.
From what i saw last year he is still capable and much better defensively

Yeah, no.

The NHL isn't a charity league. The Flyers gave him his shot last year, and he couldn't do anything with it. I respect the guy for what he did during his prime, but those days are clearly behind him. He should look into the SHL if he still wants to play professional hockey.

Sadly, I agree with this. His playing days in the NHL are no more. He wasn't anything special on the ice last year. Plus now there is a new #12 in town who can actually play. The nostalgia wore off last year for me.

Is honestly rather pay Gagne 1-2 million for this year than pay Vinny 4.5 million to be our 9th or 10th best forward this year let alone the next 4
