Good teams make good moves beyond the draft. Now if you're saying that Bergevin doesn't have to make any good moves this season or off-season because he's got a longer timetable, then okay, but his legacy will be determined by the moves he eventually makes (or doesn't make).
The only big move in the last few years that had any impact has been the Kings getting Richards and Carter. Very few big moves happen in the cap era. If you're going to make a move, you need to have the rest of the pieces in place and that happens through the draft. There's no point making moves until you have the team ready to compete.

Post right above yours suggested Chez Paris. That's definitely thinking outside the box.

You have any other ideas? Maybe trade Briere and Budaj for Tavares? Trading dead wood vets for picks/prospects is precisely what the team should do.

I trade anybody not named Galchenyuk, Subban or Price for Eberle.

Should have got Kovalchuk...

My suggestion:
To Nashville
Gionta, Markov, Gorges, DD, MT, Gallant and 2nd

To Montreal
Wilson, Weber and 3rd.

To Florida
Youppi, Diaz, Bourque + nashvilles 3rd, MB

To Montreal
Mathias, Kulikov

Move Price to wing, Murray in net.
Subban becomes player coach.

There are big moves and there are also lesser good moves, some that can even seem small when they happen but look awfully good later when the team is ready to compete. Like Patrick Sharp for Matt Ellis. Johnny Boychuk for Matt Hendricks. Williams for O'Sullivan and a 2nd round pick. Kunitz (and a prospect) for Whitney. And so on.

Anyway, not meaning to be tedious, just saying that the draft by itself won't get the Habs to contention. Good teams make good moves beyond the draft. And they don't have to be blockbusters.

Before the Olympic break I'd move:

Diaz+ Leblanc for Jamie McGinn

Bourque @ 50% + 3rd for Kyle Clifford

At the draft I'd move:

Briere @ 50% for Luke Adam

Desharnais + Collberg for Colin Wilson + Austin Watson

George + ? For Alex Chaisson

In free agency I'd add:

Mark Fayne, Brandon Bollig, and Mike Kostka

Next years lineup looks like:

Max Pacioretty - Alex Galchenyuk - Brendan Gallagher

Colin Wilson - Tomas Plekanec - Alex Chaisson

Kyle Clifford - Lars Eller - Jamie McGinn

Travis Moen - Austin Watson - Brandon Prust

Michael Bournival - Brandon Bollig

Andre Markov - PK Subban

Nathan Beaulieu - Mark Fayne

Alexei Emelin - Greg Pateryn

Davis Drewiske - Mike Kostka

Carey Price

Peter Budaj

That post makes much more sense than anything else presented in this thread.

You guys have to realize one very simple thing: it's not possible to trade away all of your dead wood for picks and prospects. If it was possible, a team would have done that already. You want to trade away some vets and underperformings guys? Fine. But expect to take on similar contracts in return. Lateral moves at best.

I remember Bergevin saying in an interview that cap hit and term are the first two things mentioned between GMs when a trade is remotely being considered. GMs are not taking on dead cap space for picks and prospects. Forget it.

Trade deadline...trust your scouts and people that know what the players are up to.

Get rid of all the players that take their off ice activities as a priorities and send them to florida, edmonton, or NYI.

What you have is a privelege, not a right. Earn it.

Markov should be traded for a 1st and a prospect if possible but settle on only a first if necessary.

Efforts should be made to get anything for Gionta, Bourque, Diaz, Bouillon and Briere.

Then at the draft, we need to trade up. Well have the 1st from markov, our first and a prospect to offer. We could offer two firsts, Leblanc and Eller for a top 3 pick.

Then at free agency we sign Jagr Markov and Vanek.

Then our forwards would look like:

Jagr pleks (top 3 pick)
Paciorretty dd Gallagher
Vanek galchenyuk (prospect)
Prust moen white

Oh and sign Guy Boucher

Chez Paré you mean?

I'm pretty sure that would be a good way to get fired. Actually Therrien & Bergevin should have a meeting over there for lunch. I heard it's fresh & excellent.
