The Red Wings Played the First Outdoor NHL Game, It Was Played in a Prison!

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just stumbled across it and thought with all the outdoor games, this was a pretty cool story!

Highlights:

They actually played against the inmates.
They won at least 18-0, no one knows for sure as they stopped keeping score after the first period
They actually "traded" some players, and mixed the two squads together!

Was it outdoor or in a prison?

Or was it an outdoor prison?

It was an outdoor rink played within the confines of the prison grounds.

Cool that they played an outdoor game, but it wasn't an NHL game since only 1 NHL team was involved.

The "Edmonton Inmates" has a nice ring to it!

Wait, they faced prisoners?

So you're telling me if I commit crimes I get benefits of not only free electricity, water, heat, clean clothes, shelter, food but now I get to play hockey against the Red Wings? All while taxpayers pour their wallets for these guys? 21st century future boyzz.

Unless we are talking about the guys in-charge of the prison.

In 1954, the Red Wings played the NHL's first outdoor exhibition game. The opponent: the Marquette Prison Pirates, a bunch of maximum-security inmates.

There are plenty of things from bygone eras that make me think, "this could never happen today". But I think this one tops them all.
