Starkbaum is the starting goalie. Don't you think it might be a good idea to take Swette and Weinhandl to Sochi, so they can gain some experience for future tournaments?

And not sure what you are talking about, Starkbaum has been playing in Sweden for the last two years.

Starkbaum is an indisputable lock for the number one spot- only a complete fool would contest that thought. But i can't see Austria getting anything out of their games if those two KAC goalies happen to be starting. You will need a remarkable goalie performance to get anything out of Olympics- and those too are not going to deliver it. Then again- are Austrians even waiting for somewhat of a decent performance? What is the morale in your country right now?

My personal opinion: The only realistic chance we have is against Norway. Finland and Canada are going to destroy us. To be honest, not many people outside of hockey fans even know that Team Austria is playing in Sochi.

I would think so, but not entirely sure.

Respect to them
It's not true that there is better attendance in hockey than in soccer. And honestly it is not impressive what Austria has reached in icehockey. Since a lot of years we always play one year at the B WC and the next on the A WC.

Our neighbour Switzerland has nearly the same amount of inhabitants, but they managed to win silver while we managed to get relegated. I don't see what is so special about the achievement of Austrian Ice Hockey.

love how Van always speaks out what he thinks and hits the nail on the head when he talks about hockey made in Austria.

not that it will change much but you never know if you don't try.

brian lebler out 3 to 4 weeks due to a broken hand. his appearance at the Olympics probably not in danger. he was playing well though, hopefully comes back as strong.

meh, Klimbacher or Heinrich could replace him pretty easily IMO.

alright, Nödl and Lange in, Kristler and Weinhandl out. why not earlier? seems like Manny can't stand his ground under pressure but I am ok with it since this are good decisions.

feel a little bad for Kristler, wouldn't be my first choice for a forward who has to stay at home but so may it be.

Thomas Vanek named captain for the first time.

Rotter is with the taxi squad... pewal is not, but that is not much of a surprise... to many top 6 forwards better then him on the roster.

Injury replacements or just replacements based on performance? I thought you could only sub out players that were named to the squad once they have been hurt

Good to see Nodl named to the team. His checking and defensive game will be very beneficial to the Austrian's bottom 6. There's a reason he was able to play over 180 NHL games.

shoot, was really hoping that Brueckler was gonna make the squad. haven't seen him play since i was 12-13 and he was playing at Wisconsin. Loved going to watch him play at the Kohl Center. He was dynamite back then.

Austria is going to play Denmark today Feb, 4th at 20:20 (11:20am PST, 2:00pm EST) in Vienna. The livestream should be viewable world-wide (only exception is Denmark itself).

This is the last test before Sochi. Roster is here.

Anyone here watching?

Watched the game, there were a lot of weak calls both ways as always with IIHF refs.
Game was pretty even, not a thriller though..

Yes, some very questionable calls. The refs (Smetana & ?) work in the EBEL and that's not how they do their job there. Hey, Austria wanted to practice their special teams and they certainly did that.

For sure,
there was a period in the 2nd were special teams were on the ice all the time.

Austria should have won this game though, I think they had more PP's and iced an almost full olympic roster.
Denmark were missing several European based players and gave debuts to 4 U20 guys.

Weinhandl is injured but both he and Kristler were replaced with permission of the Austrian Olympic Comitee. The explanation of the ÖEHV sounds like they were performance related replacements.
