Don't use goals as a measure of 5v5 performance in such small samples, the variance effects become too big. The Rangers have gone from the 5th best 5v5 team in 12-13 (3rd in the East) to the 8th best in 13-14 (3rd in the East). Not a huge drop off and a lot is due to the slow start and that dreadful ten game stretch in the middle of the season - we were a lot more consistent last year.

Funnily enough, if we go by goals we were almost as bad a 5v5 team last year when the score was close as we are this year. We just piled it on when the game was out of hand in either way last year, whereas this season our scoring troubles have been about the same no matter the score in the game.

This.

We always complain about not having enough skill players, then shy away from the skill players and pick a safer player.

AA would have better stats in an AV system, though.

I love AA, especially when he tries shooting goalies! However offensive players are harder to come by than defensive players and I have always believed that the best centers are solid playmakers. Brassard is still a better puck distributer than AA. AA is streakie offensively and he's enjoying a solid season in Columbus though I doubt he'll ever be more than a 15-20g 40-45pt solid 2 way player. Brassard isn't terrible defensively and I can see him being a regular 30-40 assist guy who chips in another 10-15g. So I go with Brass though not by much.

A little OT, but still...

If we didn't trade Gomez for McDonagh, we also would've not signed Gaborik. So had we kept Gomez, whi would have been gone by now via a buy out, and we wouldn't have the Gabby return either.

Trading Gomez resulted in us getting: McDonagh, John Moore, Brassard and Dorsett.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that this one move saved us from being a non-playoff embarrassment right now, as well as last year.

The Rangers figure someone like Miller, Fast, Kristo, Lindberg will provide the depth that it lacks now. AA and Dubi are easier to replace via the farm than Nash.
