Our 2014-15 Center Situation

So I want to see how people would vote.

1. I don't want to hear people suggest that we can get Stastny for $5 because it's "fair". What's "fair" is what someone is willing to pay for his services. That's one of the basic rules of economics - a good or a service is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. No GM will be dumb enough to even try to offer him $5. He's looking at $7.5 at a minimum, maybe $8.

2. I am discounting the possibility of acquiring a top-6 center because it's not easy. It may happen, but that's not a realistic option at this moment.

3. The options I presented are the only ones that work under the cap. You can't have Brad/Stastny + Girardi + Cally + Brass all under the cap. I mean, you could, but then you have to dump Staal+Step, an even less likely scenario.

4. I really don't see how we resign Boyle under any scenario other than dumping Brad and not signing Stastny. If we get one of them, we can't afford Boyler.

So the question is simple: what combination of centers do you pick.

I'm divided, because signing Stastny would be such a classic NYR move, on the other hand Stastny-Stepan-Miller/Lindberg-Boyle/D.Moore would be nice down the middle. Not sure.

I originally voted for option #2, but changed my mind immediately. I think #4 is better. Stastny is young enough that if we give him a contract taking him to his mid-30s, he'll still be a quality center for us, and as he ages and gets worse, the cap will rise so his cap hit won't be as bad.

Callahan is a great player and it will be awful watching him in another uniform, but he's the guy we can replace easiest. With Nash and MZA on the top two lines, we have either Fast or Kristo who'll likely be able to step in to take over third line RW duties.

None of the above.

Dump Brad. Keep Step and Brass. Put Miller at 3C.

Resign or trade Girardi. Trade Callahan.

Don't worry about having extra cap space.

What do they get from dumping Callahan?

Hypothetically, which there is no way it would work, if they could trade Callahan for Stastny, where the teams were given permission to talk to the players before hand to work out extensions, it makes Richards an easy buyout.

So basically they are removing Callahan potential over 6M cap hit, removing Richards 6.6M cap hit and adding Stastny at 7.5M, then they still have ~ 5.x mil left to try to minimize the loss of Callahan.

Depending on what they used that ~ 5M cap space on, I would make that swap.

I mean, if I HAD to choose, I'd choose the 4th option. But should we really sign Stastny?

Where's the option to dump Brad and Cally and not sign Stasny? Cause that's what I want.

I voted for the second one, but I want to trade Callahan.

Dump Brad, Step, Brass, Miller as 1,2,3, and get some assets for Cally.

Dump Brad, Keep Step & Brass. Trade Cally. Girardi can either stay or be traded depending on the contract or market for him.

1. Keep Girardi
2. Move Callahan if he won't budge on his next contract--I expect that will be the case.
3. Dump Richards at the end of the year.

Definitely keeping Stepan. Is there anyone seriously considering not doing that?

I don't know how I feel about Stastny. He's a good player but I certainly don't look at him as an elite center. Not someone I'd be giving a $7 mil per--7 year deal to anyway.

Probably bring back Brassard.

I choose Other.

Trade Callahan before the deadline.

If the numbers that have been bandied about for Dan G are accurate at 5.2 per over 6 years, then I resign him.

At the draft, look to package Brassard with one of the 1st rounders (our own or the one acquired in the Callahan trade) to move into the top 10.

Buy out Richards.

Sign Stastny to a 6 year deal at 7.5 per

Stepan - Stastny - Miller - Lindberg down the middle.

I think if he makes it to 07/01, there's a good chance we can sign him at those numbers as I don't believe he will get 8 per and if he does, then I look else where.

Callahan...I don't know. I hate him even think about trading him. If he's really looking for $6M, though...

for reference purposes.

Richards at 6.66 today is 10.4% of the current salary cap

Stastny at 7.5 next season is 10.6% of the expected salary cap of 71 million

marginal difference in footprint.

equal production with Stastny a better skater, defensive player, face off man (as good in that dept as Boyle)

And when Stastny's 6 year contract ends he will be the same age as Richards is to start the 2014-15 season.

This is what I would like to see happen as well. But I guess they can't keep Brassard if they sign Stastny? Honestly though, it's hard to imagine Cally not in blue.

I'm not sure that we need Stastny (I'd rather try to acquire a young, dynamic true 1C in a Cally or Girardi trade and use Brass/Miller/Lindberg until that kid is ready), but if the choices are keep Richie or dump Richie and sign Stastny, I take the latter easily.

You mentioned it how many times by now?

It's irrelevant because next season a bunch of our players (Lundqvist, Girardi, Stralman, Callahan, Kreider, Zuccarello) are getting very large salary increases.

This summer we are getting hit by a salary hurricane and at least one, maybe two players will need to be given up upon.

Stastny is going to be a huge UFA bust. He just isn't that good.

Richards at least at one point in time was an elite center. Now he is a buyout. Stastny is younger, sure, but he is not even close to as good of a player.

And Richards at this level of production is a buyout. He was signed at 10.4% as a 70+ point player. Stastny has never and will never be that.

Stastny has posted 3 seasons of 70 points or better.

Richards would not be a buy out candidate at 28 years old.

I wonder after how many seasons we'll be advocating for a Stastny buyout after he signs at a 7.5m caphit. No disrespect to him, but that's insanity.

which is why I stated move Brassard, Callahan and buyout Richards

that's 14 million alone

cap goes up 7 million that's 21 million.

Boyle goes another 1.7
