Why in the world would Buffalo trade Grigorenko for Callahan mid season, what is he gona go there see how much they suck and that's supposed to make him want to stay? If buffalo wants him their likely going to offer him the most money and 8 years come the offseason and if Callahan isn't signed by someone by the trade deadline he's not going to take any discount by signing before July 1 with us or whatever team he is traded too.

It'd be absolutely assinine for Buffalo to give up anything for Callahan, he's not going to sign there this season if he's traded there, nobody's going to sign there until they figure out their goaltending situation which could make the team even worse.

So they can negotiate a deal with him before he has the option to test free agency. The same way we tried to trade for Brad Richards before he tested free agency and the Canes traded for Jordan Staal before he hit the open market.

I understand the fear of giving up assets as a rebuilding team, but if they feel like a prospect might not be working out there and can afford to move him, then it's certainly feasible. Likely? No, but feasible for sure. Also, if they move Moulson and Ott at the deadline, that's a whole lot of veteran leadership heading out the door.

Callahan for Gaborik Straight Up.

Both Right Wingers, both UFA's. Gabs is definitely more useful in AV's system.

Dreaming, of course.

Trading for Richards would have meant having him for the playoffs. Carolina traded for Staal when he still had a year left on his contract. Not the same situation.

I'm not saying its gonna happen but this may be the most bi-polar website known to man.
Hmmm why would Buffalo trade assets for a pending UFA? If Callahan was going to sign with Sabres it would be strictly due to their location being a preferred destination for him - therefore there is no reason for Buffalo to believe they would have to trade assets for him in advance to secure a deal and prevent him from signing elsewhere. That would be poor asset management on the part of a rebuilding team. IMHO this would never go down.

What about this:

To CHI:
Ryan Callahan

To NYR:
Hartman + CHI 1st + CHI 2nd

To WPG:
CHI 2nd

To NYR:
Setogouchi

Rangers replace Callahan for now, get to try out Seto and return some good assets.

According to Capgeek, Chicago has $495,822 in capspace. Absorbing Callahan's contract is virtually impossible for them without sending salary the other way.

They already have Kane, Hossa and Versteeg as RWers. I doubt they'd have interest in Callahan.

The Rangers can keep a portion of the salary. Hossa can play either side. Same with Versteeg.

If Chicago is going to be looking for anything near the trade deadline, it's going to be a 2C.

Yeah, but then you'd have to move one of Saad, Bickell or Sharp out of position to accommodate that move.

It just doesn't make sense moving those players out of position to add to a position they're already best in the league at. They need a 2C much more than another RWer. I'd be interested in moving Brassard for one of their top prospects.

Just an FYI, I posted this during Katie Strang's NHL chat today. Posted for information about Anton Stralman's contract negotiations. This was the response:

James (Queens, NY)

Has there been any change in contract discussions with Anton Stralman? Last heard, there was nothing going on. Any preliminary discussions? I would figure a team would pay a bit for him at the deadline with his play if he cannot be resigned and the recent acquisition of Kevin Klien.
Katie Strang (3:46 PM)

There have been some casual, preliminary discussions but nothing substantive as of early this week. I get the sense that this deal won't be one that's difficult to make, but probably just taking a back-seat priority-wise with both Callahan/Girardi situations yet to be resolved.

So, an easy contract to negotiate? Is it similar to the Klein contract? Is it more?

You are crazy if you think Saad is available. They value him just as high if not higher than we do Kreider.

If something you mean Brass, our 1st and more then yeah. CHI is incredibly high on Saad and it would take a huge overpayment to move him

Would you trade Brassard for Kreider?

...yeah, that's his value to Chicago.

yeah, I'd like to get Morin on our roster, but in a lot of ways he's a cheaper, less experienced version of Brassard; so if coach Q doesn't want Morin in his line up, why would he want Brass who has the same shortcomings?

If the Rangers could pull off your trade I'd be a very happy man

I think that's asking for a lot for a 2/3C
