Skills Competition

Friesen the fastest Flame at 13.8? That is pretty damned fast. Gardner with the record wasn't much better twenty years ago.

Zyuzin with hardest shot at 99? Man, it is amazing what happens at these things.

Lombardi is an absolute demon on skates. Ild love to have him on the Canucks.

Lombardi didnt compete. He has a charleyhorse.

That time Friesen posted, is amazing actually. Quite close to the fastest time ever posted. Lombardi probably would have had trouble beating it.

Huge fan turnout at Flames SuperSkills Competition
By Miranda Baker
calgaryflames.com staff

It was no surprise that the Danone SuperSkills Competition was a huge success Sunday morning as approximately 10,000 fans took to the Pengrowth Saddledome to take in the morning festivities.

Flames players were split into two teams and were joined by the top 12 Calgary Minor Hockey and PeeWee players. But it was Team White that came out ahead, dominating Team Red and winning by a score of 12-6.

"It was good to go out there, and it was a good game for the fans," said Amonte, who suited up for Team Red.

"The fans obviously enjoy it, and it's great to see so many fans and those fans that don't necessarily get to go see the games, they get the opportunity to come here and see the skills."

Defenceman Andrei Zyuzin was the surprise winner in all of it, taking the hardest shot competition and beating out fellow competitor Dion Phaneuf. Zyuzin's shot registered 99.1 mph, while Phaneuf's was a close 96.9 mph. Jarome Iginla was also in the mix, registering a 97.9 mph shot.

"I just went out and tried my best and it felt great to win," commented Zyuzin. "It was also nice to see a lot of people show up today. It's a great atmosphere, and we all appreciate the fans coming out Sunday morning."

Other events included the Puck Control Relay, the Fastest Skater competition, a Breakaway Relay and a Shooting Accuracy contest.

Flames' forward Jeff Friesen took top spot in the fastest skater category with a time of 13.4 seconds to complete one full lap of the ice for Team Red.

Andrew Ference, who also suited up for Team Red, used his versatility and puck handling skills to win the puck control relay, beating out rookie David Moss.

The shooting accuracy competition went to Richie Regehr, who shattered all four targets in under eight shots, giving Team White the win in the event.

Jamie McLennan was the lone Flames goalie in net for the breakaway relay, taking all 12 players' shots for both Team Red and White. Alex Tanguay, Mark Giordano and Andrei Zyuzin registered goals for Team White, while Kristian Huselius and Byron Ritchie scored for Team Red.

Yeah, that Huselius deke was distusting. I saw it on the news last night. I heard on the fan a few months ago Juice was working on a deke and how sick it was. Well, he broke it out yesterday and it was fantastic. I hope he's saving that for a big shootout or breakaway or something, because that deke would undress any goalie...
