Would you not agree that many of the dmen on this roster that play regularly are just fillers, short timers? Baranka and Staal most likely make the squad next year, along with Tyutin that is half the D. Bobby S and Sauer come in 2 years from next year.
One player that I am impress with is Ranger on Tampa. He stinkin plays like an allstar against us every game. He is one player I would like to acquire if we ever do a deal with Tampa.
The odds of Baranka, Staal, Sauer, Sanguinetti and Tyutin all becoming NHL players is pretty slim and that says nothing about development time. Realistically even if the Rangers do what few teams have been able to do and grow a defense from within, you're still looking at needing people to anchor that group till they are experienced.
Even if you figure Sanguinetti and Sauer come in two years from next, you're talking about (including this year) 3 years and you'd probably also want to give them ideally a year to get used to the league so even then you're still talking about a 4 year gap. Not a reach to add the right contracts to that mix in the meantime and again this is with the hope that they cash in on those big "What if" checks.
As for Ranger, couldn't agree more. I was thinking that after the game how he was the defenseman who really stood out the most to me.
