Fernandez out three weeks!

Manny Fernandez is out!

http://www.startribune.com/1330/story/979478.html

.... and according to the Score this morning, its looking a lot like it'll be three weeks.

I would never wish injury upon anyone, but this is definitely an assist to the Oilers!

I heard this last week as well. I heard 2-4 weeks. Backstrom is no slouch though. He has very good #'s so far.

Have you seen how well backstrom has been playing?

He has been better than Manny, if anything this could be bad news. I hope backstrom cracks under the pressure, could be a huge turning piont for the oil, sadly we need some help from other teams, some one has to choke a bit.

Thats how we did it last year! Vancouver sucked more than us and lost a few crucial games to San Jose.

Ya, another team other than the Oilers choking for a change would be ideal.

This is huge for the Oilers! Fernandez is still their #1 goalie, and losing him will hurt ....

Honestly this doesn't really matter. It's been well documented about Fernandez' struggles this year and apparently the Wild don't care much for his attitude either. Backstrom's strong play has coincided with a bit of a resurgence by Minne.

The only thing we can hope is that Backstrom gets some rookie jitters from the presssure of having to carry the mail.

Actually, we have 2 more versus Van, 2 more versus Col, 5 more games versus Minnesota and 2 more versus the Flames.

Those matchups versus Minnesota would allow Edmonton to take away their Wild's point advantage, regardless of results versus any other team.

Bottom line, in order to get a playoff spot they need to be BETTER than the three teams that are realistically in reach of (MIN, VAN, DAL) and the three (COL, PHO, STL?) that are chasing.

Please allow me to dispell that myth a bit. Two of those games against Minnesota are in the final three games of the season. Of the next 10 games, the Oilers face the Wild ONCE, and that is at the end of a brutal 7 game road trip. The next 10 games will decide if those 5 games against Minnesota have the potential to mean anything.

Also, that saving grace isn't much a saving grace. The Oilers are 1-2 against the Wild this season, and were 2-5-1 against them last season. The Wild have had the Oilers' number the past year.

Exactly. The Oilers have to start winning, and doing so against everyone. I'd be more concerned about the upcoming 7 game road trip than future games against anyone else. The season may be over by time the Oilers return from this road trip. There is one easy game in the next 10 (the Blackhawks) and then there is the buzzsaw that is the NE division to face.

actually, we're 2-1 against them...3-1 win in Dec. and 2-1 win in Jan.

The Oilers haven't been playing bad lately (won 3 of last 4), they've been losing key games to division foes (save Colorado)

Actually the Oil are 2-1 versus the Wild so far. 3-1 W on Dec 14, 2- 4 L on Jan 12, 2-1 W on Jan 16.

Right you are. I hate it when they mark the games 1-3 AND have the home/away marker.

The Oilers really have to play it one game at a time and focus on winning each game, forgetting the future games against Minnesota. The Oilers need to break the season down into 6 five game segments, and win each of these five game segments. They do that, they will be 6 games over .500, which is exactly where they need to be to reel in Minnesota and Vancouver if those two play at a .500 clip.
