Tough loss tonight. But, in the spirit of trying to look at positives....
Did anyone else think Toby Petersen played a heck of a game? Some nifty passes, good hitting, good D, good jump...they never really mentioned his name much tonight, but I thought he was one of the few Oilers who had a really strong game.

Toby Petersen can be the 14th fwd on this team - it's where he belongs, no higher and no lower. You can still have him around the dressing room cause it sounds like he's a good presence, while at the same time giving ice time to guys who can still improve and become more than fringe NHLers: Stortini, Winchester, Thoresen, etc.
Petersen was all over the place tonight.. Sure, he had a couple rough shifts, but was one of our best players tonight. Surprised the overwhelming majority thinks otherwise.
DISCLAIMER - I'm in total agreeance that - all in all - Toby has been useless this year, and hardly deserving of the ice time hegets. An entire article dedicated to him in the Journal today made me rip the paper up and throw it away - literally.

He has no ability or skill and brings nothing to the table except for a slight defensive game. I hope he gets sick or hurt, because that seems to be the only way he's coming out of the line-up.
Guys like TOBY PETERSEN, don't help you win in the NHL!!!

The play dies with him 75% of the time. That's my opinion I guess. I thiught he was totally inaffective.
Hmmm. I'm surprised so many folks thought Petersen had a bad game. Whatever he's done or hasn't done in the past, I thought he played a pretty good all around game last night, aside from the breakaway, which if I recall correctly was partly a bad play in front of him and partly a bad bounce of the puck. And he made a pretty good effort to try to swipe the puck away--remember too that he's a forward stuck out on the point.
I think people are taking this game too hard. I understand it was a crushing loss, but as Staios himself said afterwards, the Oilers actually played a pretty strong overall game. The 5-on-3's (thanks Raffi) killed us, but other than that, I thought they played very well for the most part.

Just because he doesn't get scored against, doesn't mean he had a good game.
Yanner is right, the play tends to die when he touches the puck, and he does nothing with the excessive amount of ice time he's given. In the NHL it's not good enough to have a good game because you didn't get scored against, unless you're a goalie.
Let me ask you something Dave, who played better last night Petersen or Stortini? Which one of them brought to the team last night?
Let me ask you something JJ since your beating the hell out of this Toby scapegoat.
Who played worse last night Toby or Marty Reasoner? Reasoner is supposed to be the accomplished NHLer but there he was throwing up pucks all night and basically doing nothing. How much more offensively does Marty bring than Toby?
Who played worse Toby or Torres who took two of the stupider penalties I have ever seen, both resulting in goals.
There is lots of blame to go around on this team. Mac T is missing his defensive forward ala Dvorak, Peca that he can stick on the ice to rest his other forwards.

I'll agree, Reasoner has had a poor game.. but, when you compare the whole of the season towards the whole of Petersens season.. you'll notice a huge difference. Toby isn't the scape-goat, and wasn't the reason the Oil lost, but he didn't help us win either. He doesn't deserve the ice-time he's rewarded with.. nor does he deserve a roster spot as far as I'm concerned.

Reasoner has more skill then Toby, to that there is no question. Marty brings alot more then Toby, because he's playing his roll alot better. He's centering the 4th line, not playing on line with guys too skilled for him(though I contest he could be on that third line) and not playing the point on the PP.
Marty Reasoner is a better and more skilled player, and always has been, then Petersen. Reasoner is a former first round pick and has score with some consistancy at every level he's played at. Toby Petersen can't help you win in the NHL, he's not good enough at anything to help the team. He's killing Sykora and Lupul as well.
Back to Reasoner, I said since the annoucement of his signing that he was no better then the Oilers' 4th line center, and that's all he's been. That said, he's still better as the Oilers' 4th line center then Petersen is at anything hockey related
The problem with MacT's use of Petersen, is that he's throwing Toby into the role that Moreau would play if he wasn't injured. Babysitting two slumping, offensive oriented, defensive poor forwards.
I'm not disagreeing that the play seems to die with Toby Petersen, but if not Toby then who?
Winchester? Thorsen? Pouliot? Schremp? ha! none of these four fit the defensive mold, although I would have thought Pouliot would bring more to the table.

Reasoner>Petersen - And it's not close.
Lupul sucked and Sykora was slumping long before they were combined as a trio with Petersen.
At least they suck with less goals against now.

TheSpecialist - MacT thinks he was that good of a hockey player when in actuality he was no better then a Louie Debrusk.
I admire Toby's heart and effort, but his skill set is lacking. MacT is either playing him in hopes of developing into a consistent 4th liner who can eat up some tough minutes... or he's playing him because of Toby's one good NHL skill... patience with the puck. If you've watched him closely, he doesn't panic. Sadly its his only really strong skill.
I like having him on the roster. A good guy to bring in from the press box for a game or two when line matching or to cover injury. That's about it.
Oiler problems are still the same as they've been all year. ...no transition game, sub-par finishing, and too many rookies/sophmores in the lineup.
