Buffalo/Edmonton proposal (Smith)

This question is sorta riding off the other Smith thread.

Would a Smith+Roy for Kalinin deal sound fair?

I think it can work for both teams. The Sabres could use a tough RH defensman and Smith fits that bill. Think he'd be ideal in terms that be brings his physical play and won't be counted on to be the #1 defensman. Would probably play second pair minutes with Spacek behind Tallinder/Lydman. Roy would be a nice depth defensman for the playoffs and next year.

As for the Oilers I believe Kalinin would be a good fit. It's only my humble opinion but I think Kalinin has all world talent. He's played well for most of the year, not so much the last 6 games. His attributes: he has the durability to play 23 or more mins a night, has good size although I'd wish he'd use it more, is a very good passer and puckhandler something the Oilers really lack. He wouldn't be the puck moving answer some are looking for, but would be a very good defensman to pick up.

Kalinin - UFA (Phillips/Stuart)
Smid - Staios
Hedja - Greene
MAB

P.S What's Smiths contract status for next year?

Smith is signed for the same amount.

Something I'd consider, though Kalinin is a UFA at the end of next year as well....

Are you joking??

When did Kalinin suddenly get so valuable.

I think it would be Kalinin+ be needed just for Smith.

Seriously? How do we give up Smith for a lesser D-man and have to throw in Roy as well.

Smith > Kalinin

no deal.

No way, leave Buffalo all soft and squishy for the playoffs. Maybe that will shut some of you up from earlier this year.

Smith makes 1.9 next season I believe.

Let's make this a little bigger.

Smith and Pisani (both are proven playoff performers)

for

Kalinin and Stafford

You think we're the only ones who've seen Gator's game slip?

I agree with you that Smith>Kalinin though.

I'm definately not among those who want to trade Smith, but I'd do this deal in a second just to get Stafford in an Oilers Jersey.

I think the value of the players involved favors Edmonton, but it would be a good deal in that it would all but guarantee a Sabres Cup win IMO.

With all the RFAs the Sabres have, Pisani and his long term deal won't be doable for Buffalo....

That is... unless they aren't planning on trying to keep Briere who will probably take another raise.

Hmm when you add in the saved money and Stafford, I might do this deal if we are sellers.

I must be in the minority, but I like Kalinin's game, and I've had no less then 3 proposals involving him and Smith. Kalinin is just about entering that defensive prime (26). I love Smith, but his value is about as high as it will go right now; nobody's having wet dreams over Kalinin, I'm sure, but he's a good young player who won't break the bank in terms of money and/or asets.

Maybe drop out Roy then. Don't forget Smith is 33 I believe and Kalinin is 26.

Stafford won't be moved IMO.

My issue with this is that it really doesn't improve the Oilers defence. As much as Gator has struggled, he still is the Oilers only legit top pair d man. Adding Kalinin would be good, but we can't afford to lose Smith

age doesnt really matter.. both will be UFAs in 2 yrs and Smith > Kalinin this year and probably next.

Smith for Kalinin + 1st would be the deal i'll be looking for.
