The Olympic Ranger Thread

I don't know what has been done previously, but I thought it might be an good idea having a thread dedicated to following our players in the Olympics.

I will of course be rooting for Team Norway and Mats Zuccarello, but I hope all of our players have a good tournament and comes back from Russia healty and with a good feeling.

If it somehow ended up being Norway vs. USA for the gold.... I don't know what I would do.

Norwegians already leading the gold medal race, with two on day one. Not bad, but I don't think Zuke can help much there

I just wanted to inform that the US olympic squad is my "2nd team" this tournament. You should be very happy about that, because I'm half Czech. But I want Hadamczik to fail miserably for some reason. Just can't stand that guy.

Also, having McDonagh, Stepan and Callahan certainly helps the US' popularity for me.

NHL may not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics? I gotta imagine guys like Steven Stamkos won't enjoy that too much.

Based off of what? Did they announce intention to withdraw or something?

It's being reported by Dreger. How much credibility it has is anyones guess but interesting nonetheless.

Lately I've found it difficult to take Dreger seriously, but it definitely wouldn't surprise me.

If the NHL doesn't plan on sending anyone to Korea maybe we'll get back the World Cup.

As the world continuously ties together and we find a more global sports awareness - the olympics will become imperative for the NHL to sell "their product" to the rest of the world and acquire new markets and sell broader television rights I believe. Even owners will appreciate a worldwide showcase when they realise what the effects may be in unexploited (or less exploited) markets like Asia.

It sounds like the World Cup is coming back either way.

But seriously, this is just posturing on the part of the NHL. Striking this stance got them greater rights to promote their players for this year. Who knows what it will bring them for next time? As long as members of the union threaten to go whether the league is participating or not, the NHL will be there.

My apologies if this has been gone through or beaten to death. I'll be working midnight shifts near MSG/ Penn Station throughout the Olympics. Any good spots to watch the 730AM US hockey games? I'll check out the usual places (Flying Puck, Any Pizza joints at Penn...) to see what will be open but any more info would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I think there is a thread over at the main board discussing your midnight shifts.

Agree. Hasn't it been the same before every tournament lately, but then they make an agreement either way? The KHL might not be all that in comparison with the NHL, but they have presense in Asia and expantion plans like Facebook. South Korea has a couple of ok teams as well, and probably a target for the KHL in due time.

Here's the NHL preview:

Norway = a hobbit.

Sweden = Lundqvist.

I was surprised at the number of former Rangers players and, more interestingly, former prospects competing in the tournament.

Prospects:
Thomas Pock
Marek Zidlicky
Jarkko Immonen
Lauri Korpikoski
Juris Stals
Ivan Baranka
Andreas Ambuhl
Tomas Zaborsky

Players:
Michael Roszival
Petr Nedved
Jaromir Jagr
Olli Jokinen
Sandis Ozolinsh
Fedor Tyutin
Artem Anisimov

I really hate how every time someone's motive is profit, it's considered greed. If you take a higher paying job does that make you greedy too? That word is pretty extreme and has become completely overused.

Nash is in Canada's top 9.

Carter-Crosby-Kunitz
Sharp-Toews-Nash
Tavares-Getzlaf-Perry

I get that Canada is good, but their roster isn't exactly blowing me away.

The NHL gets nothing out of the Olympics, while taking all the risk. They still have to pay the players while they essentially become property of their national teams. It's the NHL that has to deal with injuries to their stars. The NHL has to deal with scheduling games in a much tighter window due to the Olympic break. Ticket sales could definitely take a hit if, for example, a marquee player on a small market team is injured during Olympic play.

That being said, I do enjoy Olympic Hockey. But the NHL is a business. What benefit do they get out of loaning out their players free of charge? And please don't say exposure/free press. I'm sure the NHL will pick up a few new fans as a result of the Olympics, but nothing that justifies putting so many of their star players at risk.

If Callahan gets injured to the point that we get absolutely nothing for him before he walks this summer, there won't be any shortage of Olympic bashers on this board.

Again, I truly enjoy watching and cheering for Team USA in the Olympics, but I can absolutely understand the NHL's business case against it. Businesses exist to make money, that doesn't necessarily make them greedy.
