Great deal for Calgary, even if he doesn't maintain the level of play he's displayed this year.
It's actually 2.6, not 2.26.

Still, $2.6 million vs. $2.26 million is a negligible change. Still a slam dunk of a deal. #Flames

Nice deal. Good player, was our best defenseman two years ago against the Kings under playoff pressure.

Traded for his rights in the summer and now a top 4 defensemen for the Flames.

Great signing, good defensemen will help the rebuild for years.

Excellent "bridge" contract. Hopefully he keeps up his play.

"Russell is unproven, only had one good season. Overpayed by about 1 Million."

Feaster would've gave him 5 years at $4M a piece. With a NMC of course.

I don't think there was any great hate-on for Feaster. He was rightfully criticized for some bad moves, but got kudos for the good moves he did make.

not convinced he can stay steady over next couple years... but at this cap hit its a no lose deal.

long term this could be a guy you build around in your top 4 for the next 5-6-7 seasons. russel knows he has opportunity to play a lot of minutes here and earn a huge payday once he proves himself for real

Calgary is going to be a non playoff team for the next couple years anyhow... having Russell eat some minutes for them and either be there when the club turns it around or become a very valuable trade asset in 2 years.. is just all good good good stuff

pretty much a no lose situation for both player and team

I really like his game, and he's actually surprisingly gritty for a smaller size dman. He blocks a high number of shots, and he has excellent offensive instincts. Great deal at a great price. The term allows us to see if he fits into our long term plans and the cap hit does not handcuff us. It gives us a lot of flexibility. Personally I hope he's here for a long time and that we deal Wideman at this deadline.

The scouting report for Russel when the blues got him was that he was a good puck mover, was decent defensively but you had to shelter him against bigger opponents. He is a third pair guy so he was getting stuck playing against goons which he is terrible against. When he was defending against smaller skill guys he did a really good job of it. He has some grit as well, for a little guy he will throw. Size is his only real drawback but it tends to be a significant one, he's real good otherwise.
