So it's been a while, how has DZ been for you guys?

Is he getting the opportunities and is he living up to expectations?

Klein has been the safe 6th man for us with a few costly lapses but pretty okay.

He is playing on the 2nd pair with Seth Jones

I think DZ will add something we desperately need, which is a guy who can make a breakout pass and trigger entry into the offensive zone under speed rather than a dump in…

Once klein learns your system and gets comfortable with his teammates, he will be a top 4 guy that you will be happy with

DZ has not made many mistakes, makes great passes. If the Predators forwards were not incapable of scoring outside of a garbage goal, he would have quite a few more points. Good trade for the Predators.

I think MDZ/Klein will go down as that rarest of all trades, a genuine win for both teams.

Del Zotto has been solid. My only grievance is with his use - he has one second of power play time in his first eight games. That's where his biggest strength lies, so it's perplexing to me that Trotz still hasn't given him some time on the man advantage.

Why does the way Trotz uses MDZ surprise you? Especially what he does with the forward lines...

Maybe because the first two pairings are set and do very well together?

Agreed. When you have this many guys capable of manning the point on the powerplay, someone is going to get left off that would be there on other teams. MDZ is the odd man out right now.

I do like the fact that this means basically every defender on the Nashville roster has a lot of offensive punch. Weber, Josi, Jones, MDZ, Ellis, Ekholm, Bartley - every single one of those guys can make you pay for mistakes. If this team can get just a little more talent up front I think the offense could really take off with that defense moving the puck.

I agree 100%. It's a move toward filing the void that Suter created when he left. The transition game is greatly improved with DZ.

Actually, MDZ was surprisingly mediocre on the PP for us, with the caveat being that our PP has sucked until this season because #TortsHockey. Anyway, he had like 3 goals on the PP in something ridiculous like his first 6 games in the NHL and has had something like 4 total since then. He did pass it well on the PP in his rookie year, but hasn't been great there since. He had a knack for shooting wide and not keeping the puck in the zone. Of course our entire PP has looked like **** under Torts.

Honestly, MDZ has been much better than advertised thus far. His passing is a treat to watch and he hasn't made many mistakes. I like him.

He's the only one on this team who knows how to pass.

Table time! In addition to the usual projections, I've added a variance tracker to show how players have deviated from the pace they were on when I posted the first sampling on 1/15.

First, the NHL players at an 82-game pace:

PlayerGoalsAssistsPoints1/15
D. Legwand144256+3
S. Weber^223456+1
C. Smith2626520
M. Fisher252247-1
P. Hornqvist153045-1
R. Josi^132841+8
N. Spaling161935+5
M. Cullen82634+1
C. Wilson102434-4
F. Forsberg (A)72734--
S. Jones^72229-2
V. Stalberg121527-1
G. Bourque81927-1
S. Moser02727--
R. Ellis^41923-2
E. Nystrom16723+8
C. Sissons (A)02121--
M. Del Zotto^31619--
P. Gaustad11819+2
V. Bartley^01111+3
M. Ekholm^2810-3
R. Clune426-3

^ Denotes defenseman
(A) Denotes player in AHL

Notes & Observations:
-It's not by much, but this is, for the moment, the worst offensive year of Wilson's career by points per game (0.4138 opposed to 0.4146 in 2010-11).
-Meanwhile, Spaling is enjoying the best year of his brief career, by far, and is starting to build daylight between himself and Wilson. I think we're seeing Spaling find a groove and play to the level we can expect in the future. He's our Lauri Korpikoski: versatile and hard-working with good positional awareness and a dash of NHL-level skill that allows him to play in a scoring role for brief periods.
-Nystrom's pace on 1/15 was 15 points. He has already bypassed that mark in the intervening 30 days. His four-goal game against Calgary was a big part of that, but he's still the only player on the team to accomplish that feat.
-On the Gagner trade rumors: if we were to add Gagner, he would be fifth on this team in points per game in the midst of the worst year of his career. His career PPG is higher than any Nashville player's.

Now, the AHL players at an 82-game pace.

PlayerGoalsAssistsPoints1/15
F. Forsberg253762-48
T. Beck2435590
M. Salomaki213657+4
C. Sissons312253-3
S. Moser (N)163551+8
P. Cehlin272148-10
A. Bitetto^163248-5
A. Watson212445-6
B. Rodney^73542-2
V. Saponari221941+5
M. Van Guilder161632+2
K. Henderson121224-1
J. Piskula^22224+2
C. Roussel^222240
J. Rask22022+1
Z. Budish71421-3
M. Tousignant514190
J. Jarvinen41418-1
M. Liambas5914+1
J. Shalla7714--
S. Valentine01010-1
S. Ford404-1

^ Denotes defenseman
(N) Denotes player in NHL

-Forsberg has seen a major backslide after his four-point game early on inflated his pace, but he still stands above the other Milwaukee forwards.
-Cehlin's numbers are still unsettled, mainly because his previous pace was based on a seven-game sample size. They could should level out somewhat over the next 4-5 games.
-Calling it now: Salomaki makes his NHL debut this spring.
-Heyyyy, Vinny Saponari, nice goal! Bada-boom, bada-bing!

And, for fun, select AHL-to-NHL translations according to what I am officially dubbing the Adsfan Postulate.

PlayerGoalsAssistsPoints
F. Forsberg131831
T. Beck121830
M. Salomaki111829
C. Sissons161127
P. Cehlin141125
A. Bitetto^81624
V. Saponari111021
M. Van Guilder8816

I'll be interested to see how extended sample sizes for guys like Sissons and Moser play to these numbers.

Looks like DZ is going to get some time with Ellis and on power play.

A little article about Boclair's discussion with Legwand. Some interesting quotes from Leggy in there, but really nothing we haven't already heard.

It's idiotic how poile is handling this and I'm generally a poile supporter. Legwand is a piece of pred's history and a faithful if imperfect employee. Who cares if you are keeping him, trading him or jettisoning him at year end- there is no benefit to the silent treatment. Legwand will (or should be) a predator ambassador for years to come. I really think poile has some defect in his interpersonal skills that manifests in his player dealings.

Of course, we don't know whether management is talking to his agent and the agent hasn't been keeping him up to date (on purpose?). It's a possibility.

I don't think that agent would be in good faith if that's what he truly did. I don't know exactly how their contracts work but I have a hard time finding that legal

Looks like to me they are ready to move on from Legwand and seeing what they can get before making a decision to talk with him about being traded.

Posted the same article in the forward thread. Sorry about that, didn't see this here.

Hope he's either extended for a year or he's dealt. Now I know he's not going to return much, but if he reaches free agency I've almost had it with Poile. Too much indecision. I would have thought they'd atleast touch base with Legwands agent sometime this season.

Comes with the territory. Where there's a market, there's diluted content.

As for the Weber stuff yeah it's a shame people, especially in the eastern conference, don't see him more often. If he played for the Rangers or Ottawa, he'd be the best thing since sliced bread.
