Mitch Holmberg

Quote:
Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer 30m

Undrafted 20 year-old and Edmonton-area product Mitch Holmberg of Spokane has scored his WHL leading 50th goal of the season tonight
Should the Oilers sign Mitch Holmberg?

He is a local product that is putting up great numbers with Spokane.

If Hemsky gets moved...which he will, the Oilers are seriously lacking talent on the wings that can be called up in case of injury.

Holmberg may max out as a good AHLer, but considering they lost Rajala and took a chance on Miller I don't see why they shouldn't try to sign him.

I'm a huge Stauffer fan as I believe he's one of the most connected and his tweets usually hint at/mean something, this one is kinda random. Yeah, he's doing well but wouldn't surprise me if tomorrow they announce he's been signed.

Doesn't see how it'd hurt. They lost Rajala and omark. Plus Arcobello was a very good signing

I'd prefer Mitch Hedberg. Would bring some levity to this dreary franchise.

He's less than a month from being 21 and he's 5'10" and 175lbs. is he strong on his skates? Super fast? If the answer to those questions are no, then a big meh from me.

I have a hard time with 20 year old junior players. On one hand the stats are very impressive and shows talent to a certain extent. On the other hand they are older than 80% of their opponents and by all accounts should be successful since they have the most experience and physical maturity.

Sometimes a player is a late bloomer. But I think in most cases these 20 year olds are just big fishes in small ponds who will show they can't play with the other big fishes once they advance to a higher level.

Really no harm in giving him a deal IMO. Let him play down in OKC for a couple seasons and see what happens. Best case scenario is he dominates, gets called up and becomes a good trade chip or allows you to move one of your top 6 guys. Worst case is it's a wasted contract for a couple years(really no worse than spending one on guys like Eager, Grebeshkov).

Signing him for any situation wouldn't be bad. If he can help out our AHL Club then good, and if he can even make the big-squad, Jackpot!

Going off a hunch. If he's been passed over twice at the draft i'll ask the obvious question.

How's his skating?

He started the season with a huge bunch of games, like 4 points a game for the first 4-5 games. he's dropped off a lot in the last month or 2. At one point like 30 games in he was still averaging almost 3 pts per game. Kinda like Shinnimin last year (who's playing for Portland in the AHL this year) but he kept it up for longer.

Tanner Pearson.

I heard he's a pretty good skater.

He's the guy I picked up on last year as a great potential overage signing. He's got pretty impressive hands and plays bigger than his 5'10 height would suggest. I'd love for us to sign him

Agreed. We need more offensive depth.

With all the big, gritty forwards in the pipeline who will be ending up in OKC pretty soon, a smaller skill guy wouldn't be the worst add.

If you're talking about undrafted players... what about Kyle Brothers, who has been on fire in the GOJHL (Junior B-same team Ryan Jones played for)? He turned 20 in late December and has 54G 110P in 43GP. Set a record for hat tricks in 5 consecutive games. He went undrafted due to small size and was playing Junior C in a small town. The kid has natural raw talent, reads the ice very well and can skate. People have been comparing his play-making ability to a young Datsyuk. He's won the offensive forward award 3 times this season for the Western Conference.

Andrew Sykes ‏@ASykes_hockey 23h
Brothers: 49G,100PTS, 39 GP. Makes exceptionally smart & skilled plays almost every time he touches the puck. How is he not an OHL overager?

Last edited by gwiz999: 02-17-2014 at 08:19 AM. Reason: added to say he's playing Junior B

Yeah, his "size" has very little to do with why he's undrafted, Junior C seems to be a much more likely reason. If the Condors want to toss him a contract, fine, but this isn't the kind of kid NHL contracts get wasted on.

I'll say no. I see it all the time. 19 or 20 year old OHLers that score 40 or 50 goals, but have no business playing in the NHL. They pull it off in the OHL because of experience and heart, but they generally have not been drafted for a reason (or two or three...)

I have no problems giving him an AHL deal. Lander and Horak are the only ones there putting up any kind of offence atm, and Lander might be in the NHL next season.

Danny Syvrette comes to mind. Won the Mem cup with a very stacked London knights team as an overager.

Except its not like he just started scoring. He was just under a PPG at 18 (3rd on his team in scoring). Last year he was well over a PPG, and a close 2nd in scoring (in fewer games).
