I feel like we could fill that gap with a better player, either as part of the trade, or via another trade or free agency.

There's also the issue of paying a significant amount of money to an oft-injured player, which is one of the reasons Callahan is being shopped in the first place.
Maybe. Could always be posturing.

Oshie really hasn't impressed me much outside his shootout display.

Backes, on the other hand, I would take in a heartbeat.

He's signed cheaply to what could be the #1 team in the West. Not happening with them unfortunately.

Doubtful. Negotiation tactic? Sure, but it certainly doesn't seem to be working.

i bet both Oshie and Backes resign while they trade Berglund although Oshie and Backes will be UFA for the 1st time and try to take advantage of it..
Because that worked so well the first time?

All that tactic is is who can win at a game of chicken.

You rarely can tell if it's effective until the last possible moment.

backes is a beast.. since we're in the east its tough watching players out that way.. but him kessler and pavs would be a dream to have..

imagine slats can pull off a trade tho.. cally+ (or if he does a sign/trade) for oshie? take that for sure

Blues will trade Backes when he's 33 and his effectiveness is fading.

Pipe dream

One thing about these Olympics - if Anaheim is pursuing any of our players that are rumored to be available, I'm warming to the idea of Vatanen as a key piece coming back, even if he is a little undersized. I've been REALLY impressed with him. Right-handed, offensive defenseman, has an attacking mentality and great vision.

i can only see them moving Vatanen if they will be trading for a dman like Girardi....

In my opinion, he's been better than Maata. I'd love Vatanen.

If Vatanen is a RHD, I can see:

NYR:
G
Pick

ANA:
Vatanen
Grade-A Prospect
Lower Pick

But I'm still not comfortable with the idea of trading Girardi

You aren't getting 2 of their top prospects for Girardi

I don't even think the Ducks would move Vatanen straight up for Girardi as a rental. Kid is going to be a very good player.

if the Rangers and Ducks do a deal I bet Matt Beleskey will be a part of it. You know Sather is still looking for that Prust replacement.

If we get Vatanen alone for Girardi I would be shocked. Let alone +...

Beleskey is a pretty good player. Anaheim will move Etem before they move Beleskey. And they probably won't be moving either of them.

No. The only people who place significant weight on such a short tournament are fans.

Would really like Smith-Pelly, that guy could develop into a beast. How does Anaheim rank him with Etem and Raekell?

I would think behind both. Etem is not being moved, DSP would most likely be moved before either. Anaheim has the prospect depth if they would want to pull the trigger on Girardi.
