honestly my two favourites are Sardou and Dassin, those two are the reason why i like old school french music the most of any music genre. ITS PERFECT for any mood i'm in

Understand it, yes. Speak it fluently, no. My french accent is quite good, though, when I do speak in French.

I'm mitigated by how I feel about Dassin ... great songwriter and performer ...
but I dunno ... Jean Jacques Goldman became so dominant in the early 80's ...

Definately Brel. It's such an acting performance when he interprets songs like: "JoJo", "Jeff", "Ne me quittes pas", "Voir un ami pleurer". I also like Ferré with: "Avec le temps" or "Quand on a que l'amour".

Brel has a ton of funny songs too...his writing skills are unmatchable. Not sying Brassens et cie aren't great, but Brel is definitly the best!

I have to stand up for Brassens here. He was one of the most respected singer of his time and a great ambassador of the South West of France.
Totally agree with you regarding Brel.
